Benefit dinner
The Fraternal Order of Eagles will sponsor a benefit dinner April 19 for 3-year-old Cole Wooten of Martinez. He is suffering from epidermylosis bullosa and has mounting medical bills. The dinner will be held at 6 p.m. at the Fraternal Order of Eagles, 1999 Scott Road, Augusta. An auction with items donated by members of the group, friends of Cole and local merchants will be held at the same time. The disease causes blisters similar to a burn victim. There is no cure.

State park plans fishing tournament
The 11th annual Parent-Child Fishing Tournament will be held April 27 at Mistletoe State Park.
Registration will be held between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. Weigh in will be at 3 p.m. The fee will be $5 per family.
Fishing will be from the banks of the state park. All fish will count in weighing.
The grand prize will be a two-night stay at a Mistletoe State Park cabin.
House numbers encouraged
The Columbia County Planning and Development office is encouraging residents to ensure that their homes have their street address numbers plainly visible from the street so that emergency personnel can find the correct address.
House numbers should be at least 3 inches tall, mounted on a mailbox, be visible from both directions of the road and should not be hidden by weeds or flowers.

First graders to present musical
Brookwood Elementary School first graders will present the musical "Get Hoppin' " at 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. on April 18 at the school in Grovetown.
"Get Hoppin' " is the story of a rabbit family that includes a rebellious baby bunny which refuses to hop.
Admission is free.
Park sets decorating class
Mistletoe State Park will sponsor "Decorating with Nature" from 10:30 a.m. to noon April 20 at the park's nature center.
The program will offer tips on how to decorate a home with style and beauty at very little cost by using what nature provides.
The cost of the program is $5, plus a $2 parking fee and $3 for supplies.

Mental Health Advocates set meeting

Walgreens celebrates opening
The new Walgreens drugstore at 3900 Washington Road in Martinez will celebrates its grand opening Sunday, April 21.
The new store will carry 20,000 items, including medications, fragrances and cosmetics, greeting cards, soft drinks, dairy products, frozen foods snacks, cameras, film and will offer next-day photo finishing.
Walgreens has 3,706 stores in 43 states and Puerto Rico.
Theater to present "Faith County"
Stage III Ltd., Columbia County's community theater, will present "Faith County," a country comedy, April 25-28 at the Jewish Community Center off Furys Ferry Road.
The play will be presented April 25-27 as a dinner theater. The presentation on April 28 will be a 3 p.m. matinee.

Church youth to hold car wash
The youth of Bible Cathedral will hold a car wash, yard sale and bake sale beginning at 8 a.m. April 27 at the church at 1116 Furys Ferry Road in Evans.
The funds will benefit the summer retreat for the youths.
Miss Georgia Forestry Pageant set
The 63rd Miss Georgia Forestry State Scholarship Pageant will be held June 14-15 in Tifton.
The pageant is open to any young woman in Georgia and accepts one contestant per county and one contestant from each college in each age division.
The pageant is a non-profit scholarship program that offers educational opportunities while promoting forestry in Georgia. It gives over $60,000 in cash and scholarships to the queens and runner-ups.
The age divisions are Tiny Miss ages 3 to 6; Junior Miss ages 7 to 12; Teen Miss ages 13 to 16; and Miss age 17 to 23.
Lunch meeting to hear speaker
Phyllis H. Hendry, president of the National Science Center, will be the speaker during the monthly Time Out meeting to be held at 11:50 a.m. April 18 at First Baptist Church of Evans.

Legal help for seniors
Georgia Legal Services Program staff members will be in Columbia County April 24 to meet with senior citizens who want free legal help.
Anyone 60 years of age or older with a non-criminal legal issue may talk to the GLSP representatives.
The staff members will be available from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. April 24 at the Columbia County Senior Center, 5913 Euchee Creek Drive, Grovetown.

Volunteers needed
The Court Appointed Special Advocate Program is looking for volunteers age 21 and older to help advocate for abused and neglected children in the juvenile court system.
Volunteers work alongside the Department of Family and Children Services and other agencies to protect children who have been placed in foster care. Volunteers need no experience and will be provided specialized training. For more information, call 737-4631.

Historical donations needed
The City of Grovetown Museum Board of Directors is seeking donations of military memorabilia with ties to Fort (Camp) Gordon for a special display depicting the historical relationship between the fort and Grovetown.
