Pageant winner
Gail Morrison Wheatley, daughter of Lee and Marilyn Wheatley of Evans was crowned Miss Georgia State University on Feb. 9, 2002. She will represent Georgia State University in her first-ever appearance at the Miss Georgia Pageant. Gail also won the talent award. She is a 1998 honor graduate of Evans High and is currently attending Georgia State University where she plans to graduate in May.
Graduates
The following students from our area were December graduates at The University of South Carolina Aiken: Phyllis Pelfrey of Appling; Heather Clark, and Melba Salley, both of Evans; Michelle Tanksley of Grovetown; Tommie Bianchi-Rossi, Jennifer Fulmer, Brooke Howell, and Uttam Rathnakar Shetty, all of Martinez.
Dean's List
Staci Lee Maietta of Martinez, has been named to the Dean's List at Lander University for the fall 2001 semester.
Dorothy Genell Hogan of Lincolnton, has been named to the President's List at Lander University for the fall 2001 semester.
Dean's list
The following students from our area were named to the Dean's List at North Greenville College for the fall 2001 semester: Rebecca Miller of Martinez, and Tabitha Tanner of Augusta.
Robert J. Ellis, III, son of Bob Ellis of Evans, is a sophomore at Mid-Sweden University in Sundsvall, Sweden. He has successfully completed his Swedish language proficiency test along with is other International Business studies. He teaches conversational English at a local Sundsvall high school as a part of his International Student Exchange Program. Robert is a 2000 graduate of Lakeside High School.
Recruit training
Dylan Brock, a 2001 graduate of Evans High School has completed recruit training at Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Illinois. Dylan attended Operation Specialist training in Dam Neck, Virginia, graduating fifth in his class. He is now serving aboard the USS Gettysburg, currently homeported in Mayport, Fla.
Marine Corp promotion
The United States Marine Corp recently promoted John D. Pruitt to Sergeant. He is currently serving as an aviation mechanic in support of the war on terrorism. John is a 1995 graduate of Harlem High School. He is the son of Dwayne and Cindy Pruitt, of Harlem.
Conservationist award
William "Bill" Barron was honored Saturday, Feb. 2, by the Columbia County Soil and Water Conservation District at their Annual Wildgame Supper as Conservationist of the Year. Bill was presented with a plaque at the meeting for his exceptional work in conservation practices on his farm.
Dean's list
Amy Hendrickson, daughter of Phil and Carol Hendrickson of Martinez was recently named to the Dean's List at Georgia College and State University of Milledgeville for the fall 2001 semester. She is a 2001 graduate of Evans High School.
Young Farmer Committee
Charles and Cyd Masters are serving on the 2002 Georgia Farm Bureau Young Farmer Committee. The Masters, members of the Columbia County Farm Bureau, will serve on the state committee as representatives of the Georgia Farm Bureau's fourth District. As members of the Young Farmer Committee, the Masters will help organize activities designed to increase the involvement of young farmers in the Georgia Farm Bureau and promote agriculture.
Medical Student
Mercer University School of Medicine student Jason R. Moore of Evans is getting firsthand view of what being a doctor is all about. From Feb. 4-15, he is assisting Thomasville physician Rudolf J. Hehn as a part of his medical training. A first-year medical student, Moore is the son of Jason and Vivian Moore of Evans.
Honor Roll
Ashley Elam was named to the A/B Honor Roll List at Lakeside Middle for the second nine weeks. Her name was inadvertently left off of the Honor Roll list sent to the News-Times by school officials.
