Editor:
For the first time on almost six years I acquired a copy of The Columbia County News-Times, and noticed that Barry Pascal is now the publisher. Congratulations, Barry; its about time.
As I moved through the pages I came across a letter that made me mad. Dr. Asma Q. Fischer stated that The News-Times reporters need sensitivity training (Feb. 20, Depiction of suicide bombers moms "insensitive to Muslims, Mideast woes).
Bull. What Fischer needs is a reality check. If the truth hurts, do not blame others. Im one of those African-Americans who is very angry since 9-11 - not to the point of committing violence against anyone, but mad as hell about all this hoopla paid to Muslims in our community. What they should have been given is free rides to Southgate Plaza to the military recruiters offices to fight for this country that has given them an opportunity to make an outstanding living.
Fischer was appalled at Jon Tanners cartoon showing mothers regaling their sons death. I saw the real thing on CNN as the wife and mother of a suicide bomber talked about how proud they were that their husband and son carried out such a deed. I was also mad as heck when I found out that his family would be taken care of for life, being given a place to live, money to spend and medical care for life.
Im a Vietnam veteran who was stationed on the tri-borders of Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia, which meant that every day we were either going to get a rocket attack, rifle fire or, worse still, zappers (now theyre called suicide bombers) trying and kill us. But I have more respect for those who tried to cut my life short than I do for idiot Palestinian suicide bombers. They never attacked civilians - only military targets.
All I hear is that Islam is a peaceful religion, nothing about what Fischer can do to address the problem. To the News-Times staff and Jon Tanner, I give you big thumbs up. Keep telling it like it is in every edition. I strongly suggest that Fischer take your speakers bureau and her sensitivity training and shove them and herself up the ramp onto a plane bound for the Middle East
