North Harlem Elementary
North Harlem Elementary pupils will participate in the Leukemia Society's Pennies for Patients campaign until Friday. All grades will participate by bringing in spare change to help in the fight against childhood cancer. The school will be participating in the event until Friday.
Open house registration
Martinez Baptist Hearts and Hands Christian Day School will hold an open house registration Tuesday from 3 to 6 p.m. Enrollment will be for K-2 through eighth grade for the 2002-03 school year.

Gardening seminar
The Columbia County Cooperative Extension Service will sponsor a free seminar on organic gardening at the Savannah Rapids Pavilion in Martinez, Thursday, Feb. 28, from 10 a.m. till noon.

Lakeside silent auction
The Lakeside High School Show Choir is having a silent auction and talent show on Friday, March 8, at the Lakeside High School Auditorium. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for auction bids. Registration
Columbia County Christian Academy's registration for Mothers' Day Out, pre-K, kindergarten and elementary through sixth grade begins Feb. 28, for the community. Classes are in a home school setting, and spaces are limited. For more information, call 863-0535.
Free tutoring
Tutors are now available to work one-on-one with adults who want to improve their minimal reading skills. There is no charge for tutorial services and workbook materials. Subscribers meeting
The Appling Volunteer Fire Department will have its annual subscribers meeting Thursday at 7 p.m. The meeting will be at station No. 1 in downtown Appling. The meeting will be open to residents of the Appling Volunteer Fire District. Election of the board of directors, approval of the 2002 budget and plans for the future will be discussed.
Law enforcement academy
The Columbia County Sheriff's Office will be having a Citizen's Law Enforcement Academy beginning March 7. Participants will learn about the everyday operations of the sheriff's office and will receive firearms training at a shooting range.
