Radio licensing classes

The Amateur Radio Club of Augusta will be having licensing classes beginning Feb. 4 in the first classroom at Doctor's Hospital. The classes will take place at 7 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays and will be offered for eight weeks. School council meetings

The Harlem High School Council will meet at 7 p.m. in the school media center on the following dates for the remainder of the 2002 school year: Feb. 7, March 7, April 11, May 2, June 6, July 11 and August 1.

Fencing classes offered

The Augusta Fencers Club is now offering two new classes in beginning foil. The first - a youth class for those 11 to 14 - meets from 6-7 p.m. Fridays. The second - an adult class - meets 6-7 p.m. Thursdays. All competitive equipment is provided for both classes, and the cost is $40 each. For more information or to register, call 722-8878.

Sierra Club meeting

The Sierra Club will be meeting at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 15 at the Unitarian Church on Walton Way Extension. Robyn Jarrett with the Georgia Department of Tourism will be the guest speaker. For more information, call 863-2324.

Spanish classes offered

Beginner-level Spanish classes will be offered staring in January at Gibbs Library. The class will be taught from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and will continue through April. There is no cost, but advance registration is required. For more information, call 863-1946.

Coast Guard Auxiliary

The next meeting of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will be held Jan. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the Port Authority Building by the Augusta Boat House. The Auxiliary has new leadership: Norman Daniels, who recently relieved Dr. Wade Hamer as Flotilla Commander, and Kimberly Dailey, who assumed the job as Vice Commander. The Coast Guard Auxiliary is charged with teaching boating safety and free boat inspection for the CSRA.

Fire department meeting

The Leah Volunteer Fire Department will have a special meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 4 at station No. 2 on Burks Mountain Road. The public is invited to attend.

Prayer site offered

First Baptist Church of Evans is offering its sanctuary as a place for prayer and meditation from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Thursdays. For more information, call 863-1228. The church is located on the corner of Washington and Belair roads.

Volunteers sought

United Hospice of Augusta is looking for volunteers to help the area's terminally ill patients. Training will be conducted to fit volunteers' schedules. Office volunteers also are needed. For more information, call Kathy Gerstein at 481-9930.

Theatre presentation

The August Mini Theatre is now selling tickets for its revised play Pickin' at 430 8th St. The show, which details tolerance and violence in schools, will be presented at 8 p.m. Jan. 18; 3 and 8 p.m. Jan. 19; and 3 p.m. Jan. 20 at Augusta Technical College's Jack B. Georgia forestry advice

The Georgia Forestry Commission is offering advice to residents on whether their homes are in the line of fire. The service is particularly aimed at rural residents. For more information, call Chief Ranger Steve Abbott at 556-3962.

Free mulch offered

The City of Thomson is offering free mulch to all interested farmers, businesses and residents. The city grinds all of its yard trimmings and collects the mulch on a quarterly basis. Loading assistance will be provided at a mulch pickup site on request. For more information, call (706) 595-1781.

Shoe collection

The Georgia Podiatric Medical Association is running a shoe collection drive for the homeless in the Augusta area. The association will accept new and used shoes of any size, and donations can be brought to any local podiatrist's office through January. For more information, call Dr. Kent E. Vehicle donation

The National Kidney Foundation of Georgia's is seeking donations of old vehicles to be sold as a fund-raiser.

Foster parents needed

The Columbia County Department of Family and Children Services is looking for potential foster parents. All those interested in becoming foster parents or with questions are asked to call Cindy Taylor at 541-1640.

Community volunteers needed

Augusta Child Advocates is recruiting community volunteers to work with and on behalf of abused children in Richmond County. Training begins Jan. 3. Those interested should call 737-3006.

Volunteers needed

The Court Appointed Special Advocate Program is looking for volunteers age 21 and older to help advocate for abused and neglected children in the juvenile court system.

Volunteers work alongside the Department of Family and Children Services and other agencies to protect children who have been placed in foster care. Volunteers need no experience and will be provided specialized training. For more information, call 737-4631.

A storytime for all ages is offered at 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays at Euchee Creek Library.

Club member sought

The Harlem Woman's Club is accepting new members. The club supports local communities and Columbia County's schools. Historical donations needed

The City of Grovetown Museum Board of Directors is seeking donations of military memorabilia with ties to Fort (Camp) Gordon for a special display depicting the historical relationship between the fort and Grovetown.

Photographs, documents, uniforms, personal military equipment, medals and copies of news article are needed. Donated items will be displayed in two glass cases which were purchased through a grant from the Fort Gordon Officers Wives Club.
