Current events
All Columbia County libraries will be closed New Year's Day in observance of the holiday. They also will close early at 5 p.m. on Dec. 31. The book return box at Gibbs Library will be locked to prevent over filling. Fines will not be charged for the holiday.
Correction
An incorrect charge was given for an arrest reported in the Dec. 23 Columbia County News Times. Barry William Edwards was charged with driving on a suspended license.
Get up and go
The Leah Volunteer Fire Department will have a special meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 4 at station No. 2 on Burks Mountain Road. The public is invited to attend.

Time for ringing out the old year
A mature friend wears a T-shirt that reads, Id ask you where I put my car keys if I could remember your name, and I laugh. Forgetfulness is supposed to be funny to the Social Security set. I laugh again at the explanation that, We dont forget things because were old, but because our disks are full. I stop laughing, however, when something I wish hadnt happened at all gets stuck on instant replay.

Greenbrier makes Christmas tourney win
The Greenbrier High School boys basketball team entered the Columbia County Christmas Tournament as a long-shot, but it became big shots after taking the title with two wins at the Lakeside High School gymnasium.

The Augusta Lodge of Elks #205 competition for the 30th annual Elks Hoop Shoot will be held at Murphy Middle School in Augusta on Saturday, Jan. 12. The national free-throw shooting contest for children ages eight through 13 starts at 9 a.m.
Rebounds help Lakeside girls to tournament victory
The Lakeside High School girls basketball team realized that Santa Claus wasn't responsible for fulfilling its top holiday request.
