The Columbia County Baker Place Landfill will be closed Thursday in recognition of Thanksgiving. It will reopen at 6 a.m. Friday.
Martinez Christmas parade
The Merchants Association of Columbia County will be presenting the annual Martinez Christmas Parade at 2 p.m. Dec. 2. The parade route will begin at the intersection of Washington and Columbia roads and will end at the Columbia-Richmond county line on Washington Road. The event is expected to include more than 100 entries and will include a visit from Santa Claus.
All Columbia County libraries will be closed Nov. 22 and 23 in observance of the Thanksgiving holidays. The book return boxes at Gibbs Library will be closed to prevent over filling. Fines will not be charged for the holidays.
The Columbia County Choral Society will be presenting the Christmas concert, "Fantasia on Christmas Carols," by R. Vaughan Williams at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 30 at First Baptist church of Evans. Tickets are available from choral members or at the door for $8 per adult and $6 per student or senior. For more information, call 855-9433.

Christmas tree lighting
The first annual Columbia County Tree Lighting ceremony will take place from 3-6 p.m. Dec. 1 at the Evans Government Complex on Ronald Reagan Drive. Activities will include a visit and photo with St. Nick from 4-6 p.m., the Columbia County Choral Society and elementary school performances from 5-6 p.m. There also will be arts and crafts and food vendors.
