Voters weren't confused in poll for chairman
This is in response to The News-Times Nov. 7 editorial ("Will of the people a sham) which stated that people who are calling the Columbia County Chairmanship/ CEO Task Force elitist are ill-informed.
School programs for Veterans Day 'impressive'
I attended three Veterans Day presentations in Columbia County schools this past week, and feel the need to express what I saw and felt.
Wrong Talmadge name
Please review the historical facts concerning for whom Talmadge Memorial Hospital was named. I believe Barry Paschal was in error in saying that it was named for Sen. Herman Talmadge (column, Nov. 11). My recollection of that part of history is that it was named for his father, the late Eugene Talmadge, former governor of Georgia.

The Leah Volunteer Fire Department will have its annual general meeting at 7 p.m. Dec. 11 at station No. 2 on Burks Mountain Road. The public is invited to attend. There will be an election of board members for the coming year.
Columbia newsmakers
The sixth-grade homeroom class of Sandra Atkins at Evans Middle School recently was chosen as the winner of a door-decorating contest as part of Red Ribbon Week. The class also was the countywide winner. Runner-ups were Glenda Atkins' eighth-grade class and Rosemary Anderson's sixth-grade homeroom.

The Augusta Opera will be presenting the 18th annual Augusta Opera and St Paul's Holiday Concert at 3:30 and 6 p.m. Dec. 2 at St. Paul's Church on Reynolds Street. There will be both holiday and patriotic music performed. Tickets will be $25 and can be purchased by calling 826-4710 or in person at the opera office in Sacred Heart Cultural Center or at Merry Times in Surrey Center.

Remembering a friend whose encouragement outlives tragic loss
I have known him all of my life. I cant think of a time when he wasnt part of my life. I am a 10-year-old girl and my friend was named Steve. I looked up the word friend in the dictionary, and it stated that a friend is someone of affection that is not a relative. I think that the dictionary is wrong. My friend loved me. He teased me. He carried me on his back. He ran with me. He called me on the phone and ate with me and chased me and tickled me. He gave me presents and I gave him presents, too. I always think of him and he never forgot me. A friend is much more than affection.
