Health awareness expo

The first annual Health Awareness Expo will be offered from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Patriots Park Gymnasium/Fitness Facility. The event, which will included health screening and information booths detailing everything from colon cancer and blood pressure to cholesterol and diabetes, is being sponsored by the Columbia County Recreation Department, Doctors Hospital and Blue Cross/Blue Shield. There will be a $5 fee for a lipid profile, PSA and blood types.

Veteran's ceremony

Evans High School will be honoring all U.S. military veterans with a ceremony at 8 a.m. Nov. 14 in the school's gymnasium. There will be a presentation of the colors by the school's JROTC color guard, a speech by Ret. First Sergeant Loyd Pate of Grovetown, and the playing of taps by the school's band. Meeting date changed

The date for the next Harlem City Council meeting has been changed to 6 p.m. Nov. 15 due to a rescheduling in observance of Veterans Day. A town meeting also will take place following the city council meeting at 7 p.m. at Harlem Middle School.

Driver safety program

A 55 Alive Drive Safety Program will be offered from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Nov. 15 at Patriot's Park Gym. The cost will be $10. To preregister, call 868-3458.

Charity ball

A charity ball will be offered by the Augusta Elks Lodge 205 of the BPO Elks of the USA on Nov. 17. Organizations that will benefit from the affair are the Augusta Chapter of The Alzheimer's Association, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Augusta, the Community Outreach Program and the Elks Aidmore Children's Center. The event will include door prizes, a silent auction, hors 'd oeuvres, a cash bar, music and dancing. Attire should be dressy for ladies and coat and tie or tuxedos for men. Tickets, priced at $25, can be obtained by calling Remo Silvestrini at 855-7162.

Health fair offered

A health fair will be offered from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Nov. 17 at Gospel Water Branch Baptist Church on Furys Ferry Road in Evans. Various health displays, screenings and an education session will be present.

Missions market

Parkway Baptist Church in Evans will be offering a "Missions Market" event beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 17 at 130 North Belair Road in the parking lot of Berry and Associates. The proceeds will go toward the Lottie Moon Christmas offering for foreign missions. For more information, call 650-1493.

Smokeout event

The 25th annual Great American Smokeout event will take place from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Nov. 15 at the Columbia County Health Department's Evans clinic. There also will be food, complimentary passes to local health facilities, free health screenings and flue and pneumonia vaccinations as available. For more information, call 731-9900.

Riverside Chorus to perform

The Riverside Elementary Chorus will perform at the 2001 Festival of the Trees presented by The Junior League of Augusta on Nov. 14 at the Augusta Museum of History. This group, made up of 75 fourth and fifth grade students will perform Holiday selections with a special song entitled 'Just One Candle' by Teresa Jennings. While singing this song they will be passing a flame around until all of the students are holding a lighted candle. This song will be dedicated to our armed forces.

Their performance, which is a theatrical performance including costumes, props, and instruments, will begin at noon. It will include a special visit from Santa Claus. The Riverside Chorus will also be performing for students and parents at the Secret Santa Workshop at Riverside Elementary in December.

Meeting planned

The National Association of Retired Federal Employees will meet at noon Tuesday at the Piccadilly Restaurant at Augusta Mall. Lunch precedes the noon business session.

Guest speaker will be attorney James B. Duncan III, who will discuss wills and affiliated documents. For information 736-5778.
