Smith makes team

Former Greenbrier High School volleyball player Sara Smith is now competing on the court with the Cornell College volleyball team.

Smith, a 2001 Greenbrier graduate, is a freshmen majoring in biology at the Mount Vernon, Iowa school. The Evans resident capped her Greenbrier volleyball career by being named Area 3-AAAA Player of the Year. She is the daughter of Steve and Deborah Smith of Augusta.

High School Heisman nominees

Nominees for the Wendy's High School Heisman Program have been announced, and the list includes several student-athletes from Columbia County.

Each high school selects two outstanding seniors to be nominated. The program recognizes high school seniors nationwide who have learned to collaborate and appreciate the interrelation of academics, athletics and community service.

Columbia County's selections were: Harlem High School - Domonique Brown and Jessica West; Greenbrier High School - Creswell Curtis and Lindsey Sutherland; Lakeside High School - Adnan Filipovic and Lauren Peters; Augusta Preparatory School - Sam Nicholson.

In mid-November a judging panel will select 12 national finalists. Two national winners, one male and one female, will be named on Dec. 8 during ESPN's telecast of the Heisman Memorial Trophy presentation.
