There was a time when members of the Friends of Columbia County Libraries fretted over the lack of storage space for excess books donated to the countys libraries.
A storage room at the Gibbs Library was stacked to the ceiling, and a storage building at Euchee Creek stayed packed with boxes of more books.
Sales every other month barely kept pace with book donations, while working Friends volunteers to the bone lugging boxes of books back and forth to the big sales events. Despite all that work, the big sales rarely raised more than a few hundred dollars and didnt put a dent in the supply of used books.
But then the Friends hit on an idea: Why not hold more frequent, smaller sales, in the highly visible lobby of the Gibbs Library?
The plan was a winner. Not only did the boom in sales clear out the storage rooms, but it allowed Friends to donate $20,000 toward the enhancement of the countys new main library.
Unfortunately, the success has outpaced the book donations, so the Friends - who will have a shop of their own in the new library - are seeking more books in time for their next sale, which will be Saturday morning in the Gibbs lobby.
Books may be dropped off at Gibbs, or call the Friends at 863-0448 for more information.
