Public Input Requested

The Columbia County Sheriff's Department will be seeking public input at a Thursday meeting regarding the use of a Local Law Enforcement Block Grant.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the Appling Courthouse.

If you have questions or cannot attend the meeting and would like to offer input, call Bill Probus at 541-4055.

Children's chorale concert

The Augusta Children's Chorale 11th annual Dessert Concert will take place Nov. 1 at Sacred Heart Cultural Center. Tickets will be $10 and can be purchased at the door or by calling 826-4718. Desserts will be offered after the concert. Proceeds will help pay for a chorale trip by invitation to the Pacific RIM Children's chorus Festival in Hawaii.

Halloween event offered

The Columbia County Recreation Department will offer a Trick-or-Treating event Oct. 30.

A costume contest and a haunted trail attraction also will be offered. Businesses interested in purchasing a booth for $15 to pass out candy and publicize their business should call Stacie Adkins at 868-3458.

Trunk or Treat

First Baptist Church of Evans' annual Trunk or Treat and Great Pumpkin Party will be held Saturday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Trunk or Treat will be in the churchyard and the pumpkin party will be in the fellowship hall. The church is at the corner of Washington and Belair Roads.

Reading tutors offered

The organization Literacy Is For Everyone is now offering tutoring services for adults with minimal reading skills. Tutoring sessions can be arranged at times convenient to the learner and tutor and will be held at public libraries, churches and sometimes places of business. The service is free and workbook materials will be provided. For more information or to register, call Nancy Lightsey at 863-1946.

Tutor training

A training workshop for those wishing to be reading tutors will be offered by the organization Literacy Is For Everyone from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 10 at Gibbs Memorial Library on North Belair Road. The workshop will teach those interested in working one on one with adults with minimal reading skills. For more information, call Nancy Lightsey at 863-1946.

Holiday production auditions

The Augusta Players will be having auditions for its production of A Christmas Carol at 10 a.m. on Oct. 27 for children, from 2-4 p.m. the same day for adults and 7 p.m. Oct. 30 for adults at 1001 Walton Way. Roles are available for 18 men, 16 women and six to eight carolers. For more information, call 826-4707.

Medical facility open house

University Health Care System will be having an open house for its new Evans Prompt Care and occupational medicine practice on North Belair Road from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 1. The event will include health screenings and refreshments. For more information, call Kim Downes at 828-2344.

Community health fair

Beulah Grove Baptist Church will have a free community health fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 10. At the event, there will be screenings for cholesterol, and blood pressure. There also will be a panel discussion and displays on men, women and children issue. For more information, call 724-1086.
