For the first time in his major league career, Todd Greene will see what the playoffs are all about.
The former Evans star - in his first season with sport's most storied franchise - is on the Yankees' post-season roster. In limited duty this season, Greene batted .208 with one home run and 11 RBI in 96 at bats.
There were some highlights in 2001. On June 6, vs. Baltimore, Greene made his Yankees' debut by hitting a three-run home run that tied the game.
In his second game with New York, on June 7, Greene went 3-4 with two doubles and three more RBI to raise his season average to .571. On the same night, he caught a three-hit effort from future hall of famer Roger Clemens.
Greene knocked in his 100th career run July 3 vs. Baltimore and now has 103 RBI.
And now - for the first time - Greene will get a taste of the playoffs tonight at Yankee stadium when Roger Clemens takes the mound against 21-game winner Mark Mulder and the Oakland A's. The Yankees are going after their fifth title in six years.
Normally, I wouldn't pull for the Yankees, but it would be a thrill to see Greene get a World Series ring. And who knows, if the Yankees need a right-handed batter off the bench, maybe, just maybe, Greene could play a major role in New York's title defense.
