Two of the top athletes to perform at Greenbrier High in the school's brief history happen to be brother and sister.
Michael and Ashley Hicks both starred for Greenbrier during their prep careers, and they haven't slowed down one bit since graduation. Each has earned starting spots on college teams and seem to have very bright futures off the field as well.
Michael is a sophomore football player at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Mo. Through five games the Bearcats are 3-2, including a thrilling 41-39 win over archrival Missouri Southern.
As a starting wide receiver, he has caught 10 passes for 147 yards and one touchdown so far this season. His touchdown was a 58-yard bomb in Southwest's 54-20 win over Kentucky Wesleyan. The 5-9, 175-pounder caught two passes for 94 yards in that game. Michael is a communications major who seems to have his feet firmly planted on the ground.
As for his sister Ashley, she is enjoying a super freshman campaign for the Middle Tennessee State University soccer team. Although a newcomer, the 5-4 forward has started all eight games for the Blue Raiders. MTSU is 4-4, including a win over the University of Alabama.
Ashley has netted four goals so far this season. Her coaches praise her work ethic and credit her off-season conditioning with her starting role as a freshman. It's no wonder - this summer she worked out with Michael to prepare herself for college.
Also like Michael, she is a communications major.
Hopefully, they won't do sports talk in Augusta, or I'm in trouble.
In this day and age, when we hear so many negative things about our young people, it's really great to see two youngsters working so hard to achieve their dreams.
Ashley Brown's radio program can be heard from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday on News-Talk Sports 1630 AM. His e-mail address is AB@WRDWAM.com.
