Marine course completed

Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Rafael Lopez, son of Cecilia and Rafael Lopez of Grovetown, recently completed the Electro Optical Ordinance Maintenance Technician Course. Lopez is a 1996 graduate of Harlem High School.

Academic awards

Two Martinez students were recently presented new Gateway lap top computers and printers from Mercer University for their outstanding high school academic achievements. Andrew S. Bigham attended Lakeside High School and is the son of Peter and Kathleen Bigham. Kinjal Vakil also attended Lakeside High and is the daughter of Manan and Mita Vakil.

Piedmont scholarships

Three Piedmont College students from Columbia County were recently presented with scholarships for the 2001-02 academic year.

Amanda Flanders of Evans received the Carol Love Scholarship, established by Carroll Love, a 1936 graduate. It is awarded to students who plan a career in public education.

Shannon Paitsell of Evans received a Trustee Scholarship, established by the Board of Trustees to reward top academic applicants in their freshman year.

Kevin Hebert of Evans received the King Scholarship.

Piedmont College is a co-educational, liberal arts college with campuses in Demorest and Athens. The college has an enrollment of about 1,900 students and offers undergraduate and graduate degrees.
