Perhaps overshadowed during Evans' undefeated start has been its production on offense. The Knights showed off their balance again Friday with a 35-10 win over Westside.
Coach Marty Jackson's team has averaged 25 points per game during its undefeated start and is allowing opposing offenses on average less than a touchdown per game.
Quarterback Troy Griffith is playing well enough to ignore the "first-year" modifier usually preceding his name.
The junior transplant from Texas completed seven of 12 pass attempts Friday for 99 yards, including a 48-yard touchdown connection with Josh Butler. Griffith spread the ball to six receivers.
Knights running back Jonathan Finch averaged more than 10 yards per carry. Evans also got help from Jamerson Turner, who finished with seven carries for 81 yards and a touchdown.
The game was moved to Westside's home field after Blanchard Stadium experienced electrical problems. A loud boom erupted from the breaker box in the press box after Jackson tried to turn on the stadium lights an hour before kickoff. Power was disabled throughout the stadium and Georgia Power was called. The responding technician told Knights athletic director Kevin Kenny he couldn't repair the damage Friday, and officials from both schools met on the field to decide the next move.
It appeared the game would be moved to Saturday, but after it was confirmed a security team could be in place at Westside, the game was moved there, with kickoff pushed to 8:50 p.m. Evans remained the home team of record.
The Knights flip-flop again Friday as the away team when they play host to Josey.
Friday's switch had little impact on the Knights' home-field advantage.
Evans headed down Washington Road with its public address announcer, its clock operator and hundreds of fans who came dressed for an comically timed "Blackout."
They weren't disappointed.
Finch scored on an 18-yard run on the Knights' first drive. After the Patriots kicked a field goal to cut the lead, Evans tacked on the 48-yard touchdown pass from Griffith to Butler, then Tevin Nelson returned a punt 42 yards for another Knights score before the half.
Evans (6-0, 5-0 Region 3-AAAA) is undefeated through six games for a second consecutive season. The Patriots, under first-year head coach Ivory Hugee, dropped to 2-4 overall and 1-4 in region play.
The Knights frustrated Patriots running back Chris Hunter, holding one of the area's leading rushers to 19 carries for 34 yards and keeping him out of the end zone.
