It was a week of thrillers as Lakeside used a 48-yard field goal (it would have been good from 60 yards) from Michael Combs to knock off Hephzibah 18-16, and Augusta Christian needed overtime for a second straight week to get past Heathwood Hall.
Meanwhile, Evans had no trouble getting past Butler 31-6. The win gave the Knights their second consecutive 5-0 start.
Speaking of 5-0, I got all of my picks right last week, improving my season total to 18-3. Hopefully, the hot streak can continue.
Evans (5-0) vs. Westside (2-3)
This used to be one of the premier match-ups in the area. However, the teams have not met since 1999, when Evans won a 49-28 shootout. Westside holds a 20-12-1 edge in the series, but Evans has won nine of the past 14 meetings.
Westside can score, as they come in averaging 26 points per game, but they also yield 25 points per contest. Evans, on the other hand, sports one of the top defenses in the area and gives up just 5.6 points per game. The Knights should improve to 6-0.
Evans 37, Westside 16
Greenbrier (1-4) vs. Luella (4-1)
Coming into the season, Luella High School had just a 17-28 mark all-time. However, Paul Burgdorf's team seems to be headed in the right direction. They are off to a 4-1 start and will be tough for the 'Pack to tame.
Luella 34, Greenbrier 20
Harlem (0-5) vs. Cross Creek (2-3)
The Bulldogs have had a rough start, but they could contend for their first win Friday night. Cross Creek has two wins, but their wins came over Butler and Josey, who have both struggled this season. In their three losses they have been outscored 124-24 (that's 41.3 points allowed per game). Harlem must contain talented quarterback Keenan Grissett if they hope to earn the victory.
Harlem 23, Cross Creek 20
Lakeside (3-2) vs. ARC (4-1)
Region 3-AAAA is very tight nearly from top to bottom, and this match-up is an example of that. The Musketeers entered the season with just four wins in four years. They have matched that total already in 2008.
Lakeside 27, ARC 24
ACS (6-1) at Wilson Hall
If you see Lions coach Bruce Lane at a local drug store, odds are he is in need of some blood pressure medication after the past two weeks. His squad won a four-overtime thriller 48-41 against Ben Lippen two weeks ago, then got past Heathwood Hall 35-31 in overtime Friday. The victories improved the team to 6-1 on the season.
It does not get any easier this week as ACS travels to Wilson Hall.
