* Columbia County government will host a ceremony beginning at 8:46 a.m. at the flagpole in front of the Columbia County Justice Center and Courthouse Annex on Ronald Reagan Drive. The short program will include God Bless America, the national anthem, Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence.
* A community service called Remembering Our Sorrow, Proclaiming Our Hope, will be at 7 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church at 825 N. Belair Road. The program will include an original musical composition, liturgy, hymns, scripture readings, the Martinez Fire Department Honor Guard presenting colors and county government officials.
* Five of seven Martinez Fire Department companies will honor lost firefighters with a flag flying half-mast while sounding sirens. They will then observe a moment of silence at 10:05 and 10:28 a.m., the times each of the two World Trade Center towers collapsed. At Engine Co. 1, headquarters, the names of all 343 firefighters killed in New York will be read between the siren sounds.
* Flags will be retired by the American Legion Post 63 Honor Guard for Retirement of Unservicable Flags will be placed in the parking lot of the Evans Wal-Mart on Washington Road at 5:30 p.m. Veterans will have special seating. The event will include a Boy Scout troop, high school ROTC and soldiers from Fort Gordon. Cake and punch will be served afterward.
