Children growing together through athletics   07/18/12 - 12:14am

Sports has the power to draw people together, as it did for a group of Columbia County residents.

Four families created lasting bonds while their sons and daughters competed together in several sports.

In some instances, children in the Hergott, Holloway, Homer and Parvianen families also have been pitted against one another.

Laura Hergott, Sara Beth Holloway, Maggie Horner and Anna Parviainen start the sixth grade at Stallings Island Middle School in the fall.

Junior golfers face world's best competition   07/18/12 - 12:14am

Local golfers were on to the West Coast to take on the best young international golfers at the Callaway Junior World Golf Championships July 10-13 in San Diego.

Salil Ghamande and Hunter Dunagan played in the boys 13-14 tournament at Morgan Run Golf Club, while Eunice Yi played in the girls 15-17 group at Torrey Pines.

For the boys’ three-round competition, with 170 entries, Ghamande finished tied for 94th, shooting 16-over, while Dunagan tied for 99th at 17-over.

After two rounds of play, Yi was at 15-over and did not make the cut, which was limited to 32 players.

Columbia County team wins state title   07/18/12 - 12:13am

The 9- and 10-year-old All-Stars from Columbia County should know a great deal about the proud baseball tradition in our community. Each of the team’s four coaches are from the area and grew up playing Columbia County Recreation Department baseball.

The young group played like many of the championship teams of years past, as they rolled out of Wrens, Ga., with a state crown this weekend. The team opened the state tournament with a bang, scoring six runs in the first inning en route to a 13-3 lopsided win over Winder.

Golf tourney

The Columbia County Junior Golf Championship for boys and girls ages 6-18 is Wednesday and Thursday at Bartram Trail Golf Club.

Participation for players is free, and sponsorships are available. For information or to register, call (706) 210-4681.

Cross Country

Riverside Middle School will hold cross country/5K camps from 8-10 a.m. Monday to Friday and from 8-10 a.m. July 23-27 for rising fourth- through eighth-graders. Cost is $75 per segment or $120 for both. E-mail Tony Walsh at anthony.walsh@ccboe.net.

Football practice starts July 25   07/15/12 - 12:10am

The opportunity to take off work presented itself last week, so I thought I’d go while I had the chance.

Savannah, Ga., and Charleston, S.C., were just as hot as anywhere. Go figure.

I don’t foresee having much time off in the near future as school (sorry, kids) starts in just a few short weeks.

Junior golf tournaments to feature country's finest   07/15/12 - 2:19am

Summer is an extremely busy time for junior golfers. In many cases, they are going to multiple tournaments each week to test themselves against the best competition.

Columbia County certainly has some great young golfers as shown by Lakeside’s girls winning the Class AAAA state title. In the Class AAAA boys’ division, Lakeside was the state runner-up, and Greenbrier finished fifth.

During the next few weeks, local golfers will have a chance to showcase their talents at two of the county’s most anticipated events.

Pro Vision Elite Wildcats take on nation's top teams   07/15/12 - 12:07am

A group of girls, many from Columbia County, moved within reach of their goal last week.

The 16 players of the Pro Vision Elite Wildcats traveled to Orlando, Fla., July 10-15 to compete in the Amateur Athletic Union Basketball 11th-Grade Division II National Championship.

The group, with its core members coming from Columbia County, had been working toward their goal of competing in the championship since April.
