Three consecutive years of mishandling baseball concession stand funds are cited as the primary reason for the removal of Chris Wilkins as Greenbrier High School’s head baseball coach on Monday, as spelled out in a letter obtained by The News-Times.

In that memo, dated Thursday, June 6, Greenbrier High School Principal Chris Segraves documented a meeting with Wilkins Monday, June 3, in which Segraves reiterated that Wilkins had been warned a year earlier about concession stand funds being out of balance.

Baseball showcase

Baseball’s Georgia Underclassman Top 100 Showcase will be at Westside High School on Monday, June 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for rising high school sophomores to seniors. The regional event attracts more than 100 college and pro scouts to evaluate players. Hanna Bright wasted no time in getting to LaGrange College.

Just three days after graduating from Grovetown High School, and the day after having her letter of intent signing ceremony to announce she would play soccer for the Lady Panthers, Bright was at the school getting ready to take three summer classes.

“I just wanted to get used to it before actual school starts,” said Bright. “I just wanted to get a feel for it so it’s a little easier on me.”

Grovetown High School’s Darius Watkins has already put himself on the national map. Now he’s about to go international.

As a member of the local Amateur Athletic Union team Velocity Striders, Watkins competed during the indoor track season at the New Balance Nationals Indoor in New York City, finishing seventh in the 60-meter dash. In the spring, the Warriors junior became Grovetown’s first state champion, winning the 200 at the 2013 Georgia High School Association Class AAAAA track and field championships. He also finished third in the 100.
