Tiffany Sellers worked hard as a child to reach a goal she achieved Thursday: accepting a scholarship to play college softball.

The Evans High School senior signed a letter of intent to play for Aiken Technical College.

“Every day practicing, every day working out, doing something softball-related, since I was 9,” said Sellers, a pitcher and second baseman for the Knights. “That’s when we decided this is my path. This is what I want to do. This is my future.”

I recently previewed the large group of Columbia County baseball players who will be playing for Augusta State and USC Aiken, but those are not the only schools that will feature players from this county. The biggest Columbia County impact might be felt at Francis Marion.

The Patriots are ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the nation in virtually every preseason Division II poll. Last season, they went 41-16 and came within a run of making the DII World Series. A pair of freshmen from Columbia County were keys to that success.

Greenbrier High School swept the county’s girls and boys swim team titles in the Columbia County Championships Thursday at the Augusta Aquatics Center.

The meet sets the stage for the CSRA Championships Tuesday and the GHSA State Swimming and Diving Championships Feb. 10, as providing an opportunity for competitors to qualify for state competition.

“It’s actually a nice crescendo to state,” said Greenbrier’s Kate Clark, who was the first finisher in the girls 500-yard freestyle, the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay.
