Early in the season, Jerry Hunter suspended his players from Laney's field for a week.
"Playing here had to mean something to them," Hunter said. "They came back and understood, this is a privilege. It's not a right, it's a privilege."
On Tuesday night, those same players celebrated a momentous win with a dogpile on that same field.
Omari Hunter threw a complete-game two-hitter and T.J. Smith delivered a go-ahead two-run double in the sixth as Laney toppled Harlem 3-1. The next day, the Wildcats won the Region 4-AA championship with a 15-0 win over Butler.
