Columbia County high school softball aficionados not affiliated with Greenbrier or Harlem will have a tough decision to make Wednesday.

With GHSA state playoff games scheduled the same day across the board, those wanting to see a terrific team in action will have to choose between the two. Either is a good choice. The Lady Wolfpack will be at home for the second round of the Class AAAAA playoffs facing Ola and the Lady Bulldogs will play host to Bleckley County in the second round of the Class AA state playoffs.

When Greenbrier’s volleyball team gets into area play on the road this weekend, it will be facing some tough teams.

That won’t be anything new for the Lady Wolfpack.

The Lady Wolfpack have faced all comers thus far and have won 25 of 26 games. The only loss was to North Augusta on Sept. 12. Wednesday night the Lady Wolfpack returned the favor, winning a best-of-five match in four sets.

And after recently winning six games in the span of two days, the Lady Wolfpack broke into the AAAAA volleyball coaches poll, coming in at No. 9.

Softball

If everything went according to plan Saturday, former Lakeside High School cross country runner and current Georgia Bulldog Sid Vaughn dressed for Saturday’s Vanderbilt cross country meet.

Vaughn won the 2011 Region 2-AAAA individual title for Lakeside, leading the boys to a first-place finish while junior Sarah Bowles took first and led the girls team to a first-place finish. At state, the boys finished third.

Though Vaughn is gone, the Panthers haven’t slowed down. Lakeside has gotten off to a flying start in 2012.

By now, every county high school has played one football game, and in the case of Augusta Christian, two.

It is way too early to come to a concrete opinion based on just one performance, especially when it often takes that first game just to work the early-season jitters out.

There are things, however, you can look for as signs of the kind of a team you have.

I’ll use Greenbrier as an example.
