Greenbrier leading the pack after fall sports season

With a third of the sports seasons complete, it’s time to see where our schools are standing in the Georgia Athletic Directors Association’s Region Directors Cup.

At the conclusion of 2013-2014 in Region 2-AAAAA, Greenbrier claimed the top spot for the fifth consecutive year, and so far they are ahead of the pack – so to
speak.

To quickly recap, points are determined by how well teams do in state postseason tournaments. Teams earn 100 points for a state title, 90 points as state runners-up, and the points are scaled down the line accordingly.

Fueled by a state softball championship (100 points) and good showings in volleyball and cross country, Greenbrier is out to a 249-164 lead over No. 2 Lakeside, which advanced to state competitions in volleyball and cross country.

So far Evans (93) is No. 6 and Grovetown (53) is right behind at No. 7.

Breaking down the races, both the Greenbrier girls (183) and boys (66) are tops in the region as well.

In the state Class AAAAA overall race, Greenbrier and Lakeside currently sit at No. 7 and No. 19 respectively.

Where will the teams be in the standings at the end of wrestling, swimming and basketball seasons?

Evans, Greenbrier and Lakeside all should earn good points during swimming.

In girls basketball, Greenbrier and Grovetown are the county frontrunners for state berths.

In boys basketball, Evans and Lakeside would be the early season favorites, but I wouldn’t count out Greenbrier or Grovetown, though.

In Region 3-AA, a return to cross country helped Harlem (162) to third place thus far, sitting six points behind Screven County and Swainsboro who are tied with 168 points apiece.

Harlem reached the state field in cross country, softball and volleyball, missing out just on football like their county counterparts in AAAAA.

Will Harlem forge a lead in their region at the end of the winter session?

It’s hard to say but at first blush it appears that they will earn some points at the end of the boys basketball season if the team continues down the winning path on which they’ve started.
