The times they are a changin’ in Grovetown.

Not too drastically, though. The team formerly known as the Grovetown Grizzlies in the East Georgia Pop Warner Football League is now the Grovetown Warriors.

Last year, the Lakeside Raiders became the Lakeside Panthers to align with the high school team of the same name. It made sense because the county high schools were allowing Pop Warner to use their fields for games on Saturday mornings. Same thing with the Warriors who, unlike the Panthers, came up with a new logo. It looks like the Grovetown high school logo to a degree but not Dallas Cowboy-esque, much more patriotic. It might play on love of country, but you can’t really go wrong with the red, white and blue.

To check out the Warriors’ new Web site or to register, go to www.grovetownpopwarner.com.

Lots of activity is going on at Grovetown High School this spring. On May 4, Sports Academy South Inc. has partnered with the school to hold Dick Schuman’s National Underclassman Combine.

It is a chance for second-graders through rising senior football players to be evaluated and nationally-ranked in a combine-type setting. High school underclassmen and juniors have a chance to qualify for one of the three NUC events, NUC Five Star, U100 Camps and Top Prospect Camp.

Go to www.nucsports.com, click get registered now and select Augusta, Georgia when you’ve found the event you wish to participate in.

Martinez Evans Little League is coming off a successful 2013 and they’re getting ramped up for the 2014 year.

The senior league team went to their World Series, finishing third. They, along with the junior league team, are still registering players at MartinezEvansLittle
League@outlook.com. They have three tryout dates, the first on March 29 at Kelley Park from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Go to www.mellbaseball.org.

Staying
the course

Following the 2013 girls Class AAAAA state championship and the boys run to the state quarterfinals, the Lakeside High School tennis program hasn’t lost any steam.

Both have jumped out to a 6-0 start to their respective seasons and they’ve been dominating their opposition. It looks like it could be a special season for both squads.
