Harlem softball success has been a group effort   10/23/11 - 1:22am

There are many times when a head coach gets too much credit, and alternately too much blame, for a team’s fate.

The reality is that so much goes into a program’s success, or lack thereof, that it’s not fair to pin everything on one person.

I recently wrote two stories about Harlem’s softball programs: one about the success of the middle school and junior varsity teams, and another about varsity head coach Mike Leverett.

Young team’s success should be celebrated   10/15/11 - 11:53pm

It's true that this Greenbrier High School softball team is the first in program history not to win its region.

Evans ended that long-held streak with its 6-0 victory over the Wolfpack on Sept. 24 at South Effingham in the Region 2-AAAA Tournament.

While it's significant, simply pointing out that Greenbrier lost its region tournament for the first time doesn't do justice to what this Wolfpack team has accomplished. Nor does it give proper credit to Evans.

Before Tuesday's Columbia County Commission meeting, Commissioner Ron Thigpen predicted that a proposal to bring a BMX park to the county would be tabled for further study.

Lions can't quite chop down giant   10/05/11 - 5:54pm

A unified message came from the Augusta Christian sideline Friday night late in the Lions' slim 27-20 loss to undefeated Wilson Hall.

While the defense tried to contain the Barons' quick-moving, triple-option offense, the coaching staff and players on the sideline screamed in unison.

Head coach Keith Walton led the chanting.

"Keep chopping. Keep chopping," he said. "Keep chopping wood."
