That breeze that meandered through Evans on Tuesday afternoon wasn’t a random act of nature.

It was a result of the collective sigh of relief emanating from Lakeside High School.

It came after the Georgia High School Association posted the new region alignments for the 2012-13 and 2013-14 school years.

Why must Lakeside be thrilled with the new alignment?

Because Marist is no longer a threat.

Game-winning goal extends Greenbrier alum's senior soccer season   12/04/11 - 1:18am

Georgia Southern University’s first-round soccer match in the Southern Conference Tournament could have been Sara Oland’s last as an Eagle.

But the 2008 Greenbrier High graduate’s goal in the 85th minute gave both the senior and the team another game in Greensboro, N.C.

The goal, Oland’s second game-winner of the season, lifted No. 7 seed Georgia Southern to a 2-1 upset of No. 2 seed UNC Greensboro.

In the semifinals, the squad lost 4-2 to College of Charleston.

Georgia Southern went 7-11-2 and 4-6-1 in conference play this season.

A year ago, Marty Griffin’s young Augusta Christian boys squad had stretches in which it played great basketball.
The problem was sustaining it.
On Tuesday night, that young team showed how much it’s grown in just one year’s time.
The Lions went on the road and stormed past Augusta Prep, using relentless pressure and an up-tempo attack to earn a 75-57 victory.
“That year of maturity has really helped,” Griffin said of his team, which moved to 3-0. “I think we’re able to maintain intensity for longer.

Statistics of area travel soccer squad impressive   11/27/11 - 2:02am

I don’t know what’s more impressive: a travel soccer team scoring 59 goals in an 18-game season, or that same team allowing just four.

If that dilemma is the lone source of discord after the season, things must have gone well.

That’s what the 94 Lady Gunners Gold Augusta Arsenal squad accomplished while completing a 14-1-3 season.

The team features Columbia County high school players from Harlem, Evans, Greenbrier, Lakeside and Augusta Prep, along with players from Aquinas, Richmond Academy and Westside.

Those statistics are the total from all play.

Wolfpack runner overcame obstacle at state meet   11/20/11 - 1:07am

It’s been about two weeks since the Georgia High School Association State Cross Country Championships.

Chris Wilder’s foot might still be hurting.

It’s true that the Greenbrier High School senior’s third-place individual finish in the Class AAAA event in Carrollton was impressive by its own accord.

Add in that he was presented not only with a medal afterward, but also with one of his shoes, and it becomes increasingly apparent just how impressive the performance was.

That’s right; Wilder ran the entire race with one shoe.

Grovetown at Lakeside Basketball

Panthers outlast Warriors in overtime   11/19/11 - 1:43am

When Chris Hall got the first points of overtime, he got energized.

As it turned out, that little boost from those two free throws kicked his game into gear at just the right time.

The Lakeside senior thrilled the home crowd in the Panthers' home-opener Friday night, scoring the first 11 points of overtime in a 55-44 win over Grovetown.

"I tried to bring my team back," said Hall, who had a game-high 28 points. "I just kept my rhythm going. It just came to me.

"(My teammates) were looking for me, and it all came through."

Basketball season opens for Columbia County high schools   11/13/11 - 1:05am

The 2011-12 high school basketball season is upon us.

It started unofficially with Saturday’s 2011 Ga/Lina Hoops Preview Preseason Tournament that featured Evans and Greenbrier high and middle schools at the four sites.

Evans, Greenbrier, Lakeside, Grovetown and Harlem were part of a field of more than 30 schools from Georgia and South Carolina.

Meanwhile, the regular season starts Tuesday when Harlem plays host to Greenbrier and Augusta Prep plays host to Alleluia.

Every team has intriguing storylines for the upcoming season.

Riverside Middle School student makes program history at state cross country meet   11/06/11 - 1:29am

When Andy Caudell lined up with 148 other cross country runners at the Oct. 22 Georgia Middle School State Championships, he had a chance to make history for Riverside Middle School.

Not bad for a first-year competitor who was younger than most of the field.

When he finished the 2 miles in 12 minutes, eight seconds, he did something no other seventh-grader at the school has done by securing a top-10 finish. He finished in 10th place.

Legendary UGA football coach Vince Dooley to talk flowers   10/30/11 - 12:04am

Vince Dooley will be visiting Columbia County next summer.

But the legendary former University of Georgia football coach won’t be attending an annual meeting of the Augusta Bulldog Club. He won’t be in town for a football clinic or for a dedication of any sorts.

Instead, Dooley will be the keynote speaker at the June 7 meeting of the CSRA Hydrangea Society at Savannah Rapids Pavilion.

Dooley is widely revered as the head coach of the Bulldogs from 1964-1988. He also served as the school’s athletic director from 1979-2004.
