Belcher continues sizzling season for USC   03/20/13 - 12:16am

Former Greenbrier High School star Nolan Belcher continued his sizzling start to the 2013 season with another quality outing for South Carolina over the weekend.

Belcher worked 8⅓ innings, combining with reliever Tyler Webb on a five-hit shutout of Missouri. The Gamecocks improved to 17-2 on the season. Belcher allowed five hits, zero runs, struck out six and did not walk a batter. The tremendous effort ran his scoreless innings streak to 26⅓ (which is incredible for college baseball) and he has not walked a batter in his past 32 innings of work.

Camps aim to boost athletes' skills   03/17/13 - 12:12am

The new Evans Fitness Club has launched its “Proto-Type Athlete” Sports Specific Training Area and will be holding a gathering of Columbia County middle and high school coaches and athletic directors. The event will take place at the club, on Evans Town Center Boulevard at North Belair Road, at 7 p.m. March 25.

Columbia County All County Boys Basketball Team   03/13/13 - 12:14am

Another Columbia County boys high school basketball season is in the books. The 2012-13 campaign saw Evans and Harlem each make the Georgia High School Association state tournament and Augusta Christian make the South Carolina Independent Schools final four.

Girls high school basketball in Columbia County has come a long way over the past few years. The hard work being put in by a great group of coaches on the high school level, coupled with more young girls playing the summer circuit, is starting to pay off in the win column.

Evans baseball fans are seeing double   03/03/13 - 1:10am

They might only be two games into their sophomore seasons at Evans High School, but brothers Kyle and Matt Anderson are becoming well-known commodities on the recruiting trail.

Kyle is a lefthanded pitcher who earned first team all-county Honors a year ago as a freshman. He went 6-3 on the mound with an impressive 2.21 era and 63 strikeouts in 54 innings. Matt is a catcher who was a second team all-county selection last season behind Greenbrier senior Taylor Glover, who hit .477 a year ago.

Former Columbia County prep baseball standouts continue to represent the area well at the college level. Over the weekend, pitchers from the county were on display, and they did not disappoint.

Davis, Morgan continue to light up GSU   02/24/13 - 1:05am

In my previous column I detailed the tremendous opening weekend for former Greenbrier High School standouts T.D. Davis and Ben Morgan. Each played major roles as Georgia Southern University took two of three games from the University of Georgia.

Well, Davis and Morgan were at it again Wednesday night. GSU was taking on No. 13 Florida, and the Eagles prevailed 8-7 in extra innings. Davis and Morgan combined for five of the Eagles’ 10 hits.

The Columbia County duo came through in the clutch versus the powerful Gators.

Three teams make it to state playoffs   02/20/13 - 1:18am

At press time, we were on the eve of the Georgia High School Association basketball playoffs getting underway, and the county has plenty to cheer about.

Both teams from Evans and the Harlem boys will be in action this week. The Evans girls (18-8) were at home Tuesday against Bradwell Insitute
(14-12). The Lady Knights had a terrific run during the Region Tournament before bowing out in the championship game to Warner Robins 70-50. The Evans 1-2 punch of Jasmine Stone and Allysha McFarland just might lead the Knights on a state playoff run.

Former Columbia County players making big mark in Peach Belt   02/17/13 - 1:09am

Former Lakeside High School ace Jeffrey Stoner is off to another great start this baseball season. The 6-4, 230-pound righthander, now a junior at Francis Marion University, was recently named the Peach Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week.

Evans basketball teams notch stellar seasons   02/13/13 - 1:07am

Columbia County’s high school basketball teams started the week in preparations for the Region 2-AAAAA Tournament. Teams from our side of the region were squaring off with teams from Region 2B-AAAAA. Of course, in tournament basketball anything can happen. So I wanted to take a moment to congratulate Evans High School on its tremendous showing throughout subregion play this season.
