Ashley Brown: Evans and Grovetown should roll this week

Posted: November 1, 2017 - 12:48am

Augusta Prep was knocked out of the playoffs last Friday night, while Augusta Christian's season also came to a close. This week, the regular season wraps up for the public school programs with a region title on the line and playoff seeding still not quite settled.

Also, the Atlanta Falcons are planning a special night at Grovetown High School as the Warriors play host to Lakeside. It will be Atlanta Falcons Military Appreciation with a night full of festivities. There will be skydivers presenting the American flag for the national anthem, American flags throughout the stadium, Atlanta's mascot (Freddy the Falcon), and Falcons cheerleaders will be there as well. In addition, there will be plenty of giveaways, and the players and coaches will be wearing special, military-themed gear for the game.

Let's take a look at this week's games.

-

Last Week 3-1

Season total: 46-10

-

Heritage (6-3, 3-1) @ Evans 7-2, 4-0)

Last week: Heritage d. Alcovy, 40-3. Evans. d. Lakeside, 41-0.

Last meeting: Heritage d. Evans last year, 42-23

Evans cannot let up this week. A win and they are region champs and will get a No. 1 seed for the playoffs. A loss, and there will be a three-way tie for the region crown, and tie-breakers would come into play. I think the Knights will win a shootout.

Evans 46, Heritage 34

-

Lakeside (2-7, 2-2) @ Grovetown (5-4, 3-1)

Last week: Lakeside lost to Evans, 41-0. Grovetown d. Greenbrier, 49-14

Last meeting: Grovetown d. Lakeside in 2016, 26-12.

Lakeside can steal the No. 3 seed with an upset here, but Grovetown has been playing great football of late and its defense will make the going tough for the Panther offense.

Grovetown 41, Lakeside 10

-

Alcovy (3-6, 0-4) @ Greenbrier (5-4, 0-4)

Last week: Greenbrier lost to Grovetown, 49-14. Alcovy lost to Heritage, 40-35

Last meeting: Greenbrier d. Alcovy in 2016, 10-7

The Pack has dropped four in a row after starting the season 5-0. They are capable of beating Alcovy, but they must play their best.

Alcovy 27, Greenbrier 24

-

Harlem (6-3, 4-2) @ Greenbrier (1-8, 1-5)

Last week: Harlem d. Laney, 27-26. Westside lost to Butler, 30-0

Last meeting: Harlem d. Westside in 2016, 21-0

The Bulldogs needed overtime last week, but they finally got over the hump with a win over Laney. Harlem qualified for the state playoffs for the first time in 16 years. The Bulldogs are seeking win No. 7 and should get it as Westside will have a hard time stopping the star-studded running back duo of A.J. Brown and Cameron Garnett.

Harlem 38, Westside 14
