Ashley Brown: Evans, Grovetown, Harlem and Augusta Prep are top picks

Posted: October 25, 2017 - 12:32am

Editor's note: Each week, Ashley Brown makes his picks for Friday night's Columbia County high school football games. Here's a look at his predictions for this week.

^

Last Week: 4-0

Season Total: 43-9

^

Evans (6-2, 3-0) at Lakeside (2-6, 2-1)

Last Week: Evans beat Greenbrier 52-20/Lakeside lost to Heritage 49-7

Last Meeting: Evans won last year, 52-14

Evans continues to pile up points and they should be able to keep up that pace this week. The duo of Damekus Taylor and Corey Watkins running behind a solid line has posed a major problem for each of their opponents. Expect more of the same.

Evans 48, Lakeside 13

Grovetown (4-4, 2-1) at Greenbrier (5-3, 0-3)

Last Week: Grovetown was idle/Greenbrier lost to Evans 52-20

Last Meeting: Grovetown won last season, 10-6

Grovetown controls its own destiny to host a playoff game, but Greenbrier is standing in the way. The Warriors had an extra week to prepare, but the Pack will be at home. Both teams have an excellent defense. Grovetown must slow down JQ Brown, who has topped 100 yards each game this season.

Grovetown 20, Greenbrier 17

Harlem (5-3, 3-2) vs. Laney (2-6, 2-3)

Last Week: Harlem was idle/Laney beat Butler 34-28

Last Meeting: Laney won last year, 28-10

The Bulldogs had a week to get healthy and prepare for a team that has had their number of late. This week should be payback time. Harlem is in position for the No. 3 seed in the region, so they cannot afford a slip-up.

Harlem 33, Laney 19

Augusta Prep (7-2, 2-2) at Heritage (Newnan) 6-3, 4-1)

Last Week: AP topped Westfield 35-14/Heritage beat Trinity Christian 48-6

Last Meeting: 1st meeting between the two schools

If Augusta Prep were at full strength, this would be an automatic pick for the Cavaliers. Injuries to Hinson Fowler (out for year), Palmer Bachelder and Will Dorn certainly hurts Augusta Prep's chances, but I think they can still get a win.

Augusta Prep 32, Heritage 27
