Ashley Brown: Evans looks to continue roll

Posted: October 18, 2017 - 12:46am

Editor's note: Each week, Ashley Brown makes his picks for Friday night's Columbia County high school football games. Here's a look at his predictions for this week.

Last Week: 5-1

Season Total: 39-9

Evans (5-2, 2-0) vs. Greenbrier (5-2, 0-2)

Last Week: Evans topped Grovetown 42-32/Greenbrier lost to Heritage 36-28

Last Meeting: Evans won last year 14-7

Evans is playing at a high level on offense. The combination of Damekus Taylor and Corey Watkins has given each of its opponents fits this season. Greenbrier has a great back of their own in JQ Brown, and QB Hayden Harrison is coming off a career-high 280 yards and 3 TDs passing in last week's loss to Heritage, but I feel like the Knights will be a little too much for the Pack to handle.

Evans 41, Greenbrier 24

Lakeside (2-5, 0-2) at Heritage (4-3, 1-1)

Last Week: Lakeside beat Alcovy 16-14/Heritage beat Greenbrier 36-38

Last Meeting: Lakeside won 28-26 last season

Lakeside's tough, non-region schedule prepared them well and they are off to a 2-0 start in region play. That said, the region schedule gets tougher as they still have Heritage, Grovetown and Evans. This is truly a toss-up game, but I will give Heritage a slight edge.

Heritage 20 Lakeside 19

Augusta Prep (6-2, 1-2) vs. Westfield (2-6, 1-2)

Last Week: AP lost to John Milledge 31-6

Last Meeting: Augusta Prep won last season 41-23

The Cavs played a very good team last week in defending state champion John Milledge. This week, they will have a great chance to get back on track before postseason play.

Augusta Prep 38 Westfield 20

Augusta Christian (2-6, 1-3) vs. Florence Christian (3-6, 3-2)

Last Week: ACS lost to Spartanburg Christian 28-21/Florence fell to Lee Academy 34-20

Last Meeting: Florence won last year 21-7

The Lions lost a tough one last week and are likely in for another dogfight this week. Florence has two outstanding running backs in Marshall Brown and Eli Brayboy. Brown has 1,187 yards and 13 TDs on 156 carries, while Brayboy has carried the ball 151 times for 930 yards and 9 scores. The Lions will have to stuff the run in order to win.

Florence Christian 32, Augusta Christian 23

Bye week: Harlem and Grovetown
