Ashley Brown: Look for Greenbrier to defeat Lakeside in rivalry game

Posted: October 4, 2017 - 12:46am

Editor's note: Each week, Ashley Brown makes his picks for Friday night's Columbia County high school football games. Here's a look at his predictions for this week.

Last Week: 4-1

Season Total: 29-7

Evans (3-2) vs. Alcovy (3-3)

Last Week: Evans was idle / Alcovy lost to Grovetown 17-3

Last Meeting: Evans won last year, 52-0

Alcovy is much improved from a year ago, but they will have a difficult time slowing down the Knights' high powered offense.

Evans 45, Alcovy 13

Lakeside (0-5) @ Greenbrier (5-0)

Last Week: LHS lost to Bradwell Institute 27-21 / Greenbrier was idle

Last Meeting: Lakeside won last year, 7-0

This is a closer matchup than the records might lead you to believe. Lakeside has played a brutal non-region schedule, while Greenbrier has feasted on a few lesser opponents. That said, this is a solid Greenbrier squad led by super efficient QB Hayden Harrison and they should get the victory.

Greenbrier 27, Lakeside 14

Grovetown (3-3) vs. Heritage (3-2)

Last Week: Grovetown topped Alcovy 17-3 / Heritage was idle

Last Meeting: Heritage won last year, 45-28

Grovetown is starting to gain some consistency. Heritage will be a tough opponent, but I think the Warriors get a close win.

Grovetown 20, Heritage 17

Harlem (4-2) at Jefferson Co. (6-0)

Last Week: Harlem lost to Screven Co. 35-0 / Jefferson Co. beat Glenn Hills 49-8

Last Meeting: Jefferson Co. won last year, 49-10

Harlem is a much improved team, but they are facing a ranked opponent for the second consecutive week. The Bulldogs will need to slow down the quarterback duo of C.J. Hales and Jaden Jenkins if they have any serious chance at an upset.

Jefferson Co. 38, Harlem 14

Augusta Prep (5-1) @ Westminster (3-4)

Last Week: AP topped Bethlehem Christian 56-14 / Westminster lost to John Milledge 38-0

Last Meeting: AP topped Westminster last year, 35-14

We all know Augusta Prep has an outstanding ground game. Well, last week Junior Justin Meddings stepped in to provide a passing attack. He completed 7 of 10 passes for a whopping 340 yards in the Cavs win over Bethlehem. Westminster will have a tough time stopping both the air and ground attack.

Augusta Prep 37, Westminster 18

Augusta Christian (2-4) vs. Lee Academy (5-2)

Last Week: ACS fell to Hammond 56-13 / Lee Academy beat Spartanburg Christian 51-32

Last Meeting: Lee Academy won last year, 56-35

The Lions have showed some flashes of brilliance this year, but they run into a very good Lee Academy squad this week. ACS should keep it close, but Lee Academy should get the win.

Lee Academy 45, Augusta Christian 30
