Ashley Brown: Grovetown to notch first region win this week

Posted: September 27, 2017 - 1:39am

Editor's note: Each week, Ashley Brown makes his picks for Friday night's Columbia County football games. Here's a look at this predictions for this week.

Last Week: 6-1

Season Total: 25-6

Grovetown (2-3) Alcovy (3-2)

Last Week: Grovetown shut out ARC 29-0 / Alcovy beat Forest Park 35-6

Last Meeting: Grovetown won last year 34-0

Grovetown has been a little hard to figure out this season. However, the defense was outstanding last week & they have made a change at quarterback that gave them a lift. Alcovy will not be a pushover, but I will take the Warriors to get the victory.

Grovetown 19, Alcovy 13

Harlem (4-1) @ Screven Co. (4-0)

Last Week: Harlem beat Butler 49-14 / Screven blanked Laney 49-0

Last Meeting: Screven Co. won last year 42-10

Screven Co. rolled last week, but the performance was far from perfect for Class AA's No. 3-ranked team. They had 15 penalties in the first half alone, committed two turnovers and they struggled mightily in the passing game. If they play the same way this weekend, they will have their hands full with Harlem. The Bulldogs have two outstanding running backs, but they also are improved at almost every position this year. I think Harlem plays them tough, but Screven Co. should get the win.

Screven Co. 38, Harlem 27

Lakeside (0-4) vs. Bradwell Insitute (5-0)

Last Week: Lakeside lost to Richmond Hill 28-0 / Bradwell topped Long Co. 10-7

Last Meeting: Bradwell won last year 31-7

Bradwell Institute is 5-0, but their opponents have a combined record of just 3-16. Lakeside is 0-4, but they have faced Richmond Hill, Burke Co., North Augusta, and Jefferson Co., who boast a combined record of 19-0. The Panthers are down, but they have a chance to notch a win this week.

Lakeside 20, Bradwell Institute 17

Augusta Christian (2-3) @ Hammond (5-0)

Last Week: ACS topped Oakwood Prep 43-0 / Hammond beat Cardinal Newman 56-21

Last Meeting: Hammond won last year 48-0

The Lions have taken some nice steps in the right direction, but the challenge this week is a major one. Hammond has one of the most high powered offenses in SCISA, averaging more than 44 points per contest.

Hammond 41, Augusta Christian 20

Augusta Prep (4-1) vs Bethlehem Christian (5-2)

Last Week: AP fell to Gatewood 34-8 / Bethlehem Christian hammered Dominion Christian 62-0

Last Meeting: AP won last year 55-31

The Cavaliers took one on the chin last week, but they have to forget that loss, because they face another difficult test this week.

I think they will bounce back and get a win.

Augusta Prep 40, Bethlehem Christian 27
