Ashley Brown: Evans should bounce back, while Greenbrier, Prep remain undefeated

Posted: September 19, 2017 - 11:09pm

Editor's note: Each week, Ashley Brown makes his picks for Friday night's Columbia County football games. Here's a look at his predictions for this week.

Last Week: 5-1

Season Total: 19-5

Evans (2-2) @ Baldwin (3-1)

Last Week: Evans lost to WACO 49-48 in OT / Baldwin lost to Griffin 21-16

Last Meeting: Evans won last year 21-6

The Knights have offense to burn. Damekus Taylor & Corey Watkins are putting up big numbers and the offensive line is playing great. Last week, they faced a dynamic QB and he hurt them. I think they can bounce back this week, despite another tough road trip.

Evans 33, Baldwin 30

Greenbrier (4-0) @ Cross Creek (2-2)

Last Week: Greenbrier topped ARC 27-6 / Cross Creek was idle

Last Meeting: Greenbrier won last year 35-7

The Pack defense has limited its opponents to just 21 total points in 4 games, and they shutdown an ARC offense with several weapons. Also, JQ Brown has become 150 yard getting touchdown machine. That should not change this week.

Greenbrier 28, Cross Creek 7

Grovetown (1-3) @ ARC (3-1)

Last Week: Grovetown lost to Richmond Hill 37-7 / ARC lost to Greenbrier 27-6

Last Meeting: Grovetown won last year 14-13

Grovetown has been hard to figure out this season, but they really need a better performance this week to avoid falling to 1-4 on the season. This should be a tight contest, which means whoever protects the ball better will likely win the game.

Grovetown 22, ARC 21

Harlem (3-1) @ Butler (1-3)

Last Week: Harlem beat Glenn Hills 37-16 / Butler lost to Screven Co. 50-0

Last Meeting: Butler won last year 26-21

Harlem looked great last week minus a couple of turnovers and too many penalties. If they clean that up they should have no problem beating head coach Todd Booker's alma mater.

Harlem 41, Butler 20

Lakeside (0-3) @ Richmond Hill (3-0)

Last Week: Lakeside was idle / Richmond Hill beat Grovetown 37-7

Last Meeting: Richmond Hill won last year 34-6

Richmond Hill has a really good team and Lakeside will have their hands full with this assignment. Richmond Hill head coach Matt Lezotte will likely leave his hometown with a victory.

Richmond Hill 41, Lakeside 14

Augusta Prep (4-0) vs. Gatewood (5-0)

Last Week: AP topped Thomas Jefferson Academy 62-14 / Gatewood beat Piedmont Academy 48-21

Last Meeting: AP topped Gatewood last year 41-20

One of the toughest opponents the Cavaliers face in the regular season, but I do not see Gatewood being able to slow down B.J. Stone and Company.

Augusta Prep 38, Gatewood 27

Augusta Christian (1-3) @ Oakwood Prep (0-5)

Last Week: ACS lost to Thomas Sumter Academy 32-28 / Oakwood Prep lost to Trinity-Byrnes 42-7

Last Meeting: Augusta Christian won 21-12 last year

The Lions have been tough to figure out this year, but they have themselves a promising young quarterback in freshman Sam Roberson. He should be able to make enough plays for the Lions to get the win this week.

Augusta Christian 31, Oakwood Prep 16
