Ashley Brown: Six Columbia County games to pick this week

Posted: August 30, 2017 - 12:36am

Harlem and Greenbrier each opened their 2017 campaigns with blowout wins on Friday, while Evans, Grovetown and Lakeside each fell to non-region foes. This week we have six games involving Columbia County teams, so here are our picks.

-

Last Week: 4-1

Season Total: 7-1

Evans (0-1) vs. Laney (0-2)

Last Week: Evans lost to North Augusta 35-23 / Laney fell to Aquinas 38-12

Last Meeting: Evans won last year, 28-21

Evans gave North Augusta trouble last week, but had a couple of costly turnovers in the red zone that ended their chances for a win. Laney has struggled to an 0-2 mark and will likely fall to 0-3 this week.

Evans 37, Laney 6

Grovetown (0-2) vs. Lincoln Co. (1-0)

Last Week: Grovetown lost to North Oconee 35-14 / Lincoln Co. beat McCormick 41-8

Last Meeting: Grovetown won last year, 14-7

The Warriors made some noise with an excellent showing in a scrimmage versus Thomson, but have found the going tough in the regular season. Lincoln Co. looked terrific in their opener against McCormick (without standout transfer Gerard Heart, who should play this week). This is the best Red Devil squad Kevin Banks has had since taking over for Larry Campbell.

Lincoln Co. 30, Grovetown 16

Greenbrier (1-0) @ Josey (1-0)

Last Week: Greenbrier beat Butler 31-0 / Josey topped Groves 35-18

Last Meeting: Greenbrier won 34-6 last season

The Pack looked great in their opener last week. Josey is also coming off a win, but they may find it tough to stop running back JQ Brown and company.

Greenbrier 34, Josey 13

Harlem (1-0) vs. Warren Co. (0-1)

Last Week: Harlem hammered Glascock Co. 70-0 / Warren Co. fell to Putnam Co. 21-6

Last Meeting: Warren Co. won last year, 28-15

Harlem has garnered a lot of attention in the pre-season and they did not disappoint in Week 1 as running backs A.J. Brown and Cameron Garnett combined for more than 300 yards and 5 touchdowns rushing on just 9 carries last week. The competition stiffens a little this week, but I still like the Bulldogs to get the win.

Harlem 33, Warren Co. 16

Augusta Prep (2-0) @ Loganville Christian Academy (2-0)

Last Week: Augusta Prep was idle / Loganville won 40-0 over Dominion Christian

Last Meeting: Augusta Prep won a year ago, 30-27

A great matchup between two solid teams. Augusta Prep will have to slow down Loganville RB Christian Lifsey. Lifsey only had 4 yards on 4 carries in their opener, but exploded for 209 yards and 4 TDs on 28 carries last week. AP has some great runners of their own and I will take them to win another tight one.

Augusta Prep 35, Loganville 34

Augusta Christian (0-1) @ Calhoun Falls Charter (0-2)

Last Week: ACS was idle / Calhoun Falls Charter lost to Spartanburg Christian 40-22

Last Meeting: Calhoun won last year, 50-21

The Lions will try to bounce back from an opening loss to Augusta Prep. They have had an extra week off to prepare. Hopefully they can pull it out, but it is definitely not a lock.

Calhoun Falls Charter 37 Augusta Christian 30
