Ashley Brown: Thoughts on the upcoming high school football season

Posted: August 9, 2017 - 12:12am

Augusta Christian

2016 Record: 3-7

Key Players: Sam Roberson (Soph./QB), Chase Hudson (Jr./RB), Ben Norris (Jr./OL-DL), Ethan Austell (Jr./WR-DB)

Top Newcomers: T.J. Wilson (Jr./WR-DB), Chase Beall (Jr./WR-LB), Ernest D'Antignac (Jr./WR-LB)

Sam Roberson is the younger brother of former ACS Star Tyler Roberson who was a 4-year starter for the Lions and led them to a state title. He will be counted on heavily by a very young Lions' squad that has only 4 seniors. A trio of newcomers will certainly help with the team's overall athleticism, especially T.J. Wilson, a transfer from Atlanta getting attention from recruiters.

2017 Regular Season Prediction: 4-6

Augusta Prep

2016 Record: 8-2

Key Players: Will Dorn (Sr./QB-DB), B.J. Stone (Sr./RB-LB)

Augusta Prep had a sensational 2016 campaign and is primed to have another good run thanks to the return of B.J. Stone. Stone earned All-State honors a year ago after rushing for more than 1,500 yards. They will need Will Dorn, a very capable runner, to step up as a second option after the graduation of 1,000-yard rusher David Bramble. Bramble, Hamp Gibbs and Hunter Encampara were also leaders on the defense and must be replaced, even so, the Cavs have a chance to run the table in the regular season.

2017 Regular season Prediction: 9-0

Evans

2016 Record: 7-4

Key Players: Corey Watkins (Sr./RB-LB), Coby Germany (Sr./DE-LB), Breshawn Willis (Sr./WR), D.J. Lewis (Sr./LB), Jason Delley (Sr./DB), Ben Prescott (Sr./DE), Max Tyler (Sr./Kicker), Sam Knight (Sr./OL)

The Knights must replace All-Region QB Levin Lackey and game-breaking running back Latravious Holiday (1,169 yards and 12 TDs rushing). For most teams that may be a tough hill to climb, but the Knights still have plenty of firepower on offense with Corey Watkins and on defense with Coby Germany. A region title is a definite possibility.

2017 Regular Season Prediction: 8-2

Greenbrier

2016 Record: 6-4

Key Players: Hayden Harrison (Sr./QB), JQ Brown (Jr./RB), Ayden Panzella (Jr./WR), Eric Chatman (Sr./OL), Tarael Hooks (Sr./DL), Bryce Atchison (Sr./LB)

The Pack had a nice season in 2016 and may have a better squad in 2017. They will have stability at QB with Hayden Harrison taking over on a full-time basis. Also, JQ Brown returns after piling up more than 1,000 rushing yards as a sophomore in 2016. They must replace the heart and soul of the defense in Roshod Nixon, but they are very deep on that side of the ball, especially in the secondary. Like last season, they will benefit from a fairly light non-region schedule so another winning season is certainly in the cards.

2017 Regular Season Prediction: 6-4

Grovetown

2016 Record: 5-6

Key Players: DeAngelo Durham (Sr./RB), Greggory Rodgers (Sr./FB-LB), Shamar Cofield Sr./LB-FB), Taylor Youngblood (Sr./QB)

Key Newcomer: Jahmar Bingham (Sr./WR-DB-QB)

Grovetown was probably better than their record a year ago, but lost a couple of close games. Well, most teams that go 5-6 and graduate 33 seniors, including more than a half dozen college signees, are in for a long season. However, for the Warriors that may not be the case. Thanks to Fort Gordon, they have an influx of new players and a few key returnees that should make them a tough foe for the teams in their region. A tough non-region schedule will test their mettle early on.

2017 Regular Season Prediction: 5-5

Harlem

2016 Season Record: 3-7

Key Players: Waylin Bell (Sr./OL), Jody Cooper (S.r/DB), Brendan Maddoz (Sr./LB), Cael Postell (Sr./LB), (Triston Williams (Sr./LB), Cristian Cozart (Sr./LS-QB), Dequan Dorsey (Jr./OL-DL), Jerrod Harris (Sr./DE), Logan Etterle (Jr./DB), Kelvin Burns (Sr./DE), Kevin Jones (Jr./DB-WR), Jeremy Glidewell (Soph./Kicker)

Key Newcomers: A.J. Brown (Jr./RB), Chase Pennington (Jr./QB), Jimmy Cronan (Sr./TE-DE), Joe Odum (Jr./Center), Cameron Garnett (Fr./RB-LB)

The Bulldogs could be more explosive on offense thanks to Grovetown transfer A.J. Brown and incoming freshman Cameron Garnett. Brown is a diminutive back, but has a ton of quickness and Garnett is a 6-foot-1, 205-pound freshman who I am hearing all sorts of glowing comments about.

2017 Regular Season Prediction: 5-5

Lakeside

2016 Season Record: 3-8

Key Players: Carlos Carter (Sr./DL), Cam Jackson (Sr./DB), Graham Tulowitzky (Sr./WR-DB), Will Childers (Jr./QB), Nick Mond (Jr./RB-DB), Jeremiah Mitchell (Jr./DE)

Lakeside is a very young team with only 7 seniors. A shockingly low amount for a AAAAAA Program. The Panthers do have some talent, most notably may be QB Will Childers. Childers could be a special QB before his prep career is over, but they need to find some lineman to keep him upright this season. I give Coach Hibbetts a lot of credit for putting together, we'll call it, an ambitious schedule. They face a gauntlet even before region play begins. Maybe those tests will prepare them to make a run during region play.

2017 Regular Season Prediction: 3-7
