Ashley Brown: All-Columbia County baseball team revealed

Posted: May 17, 2017 - 1:35am

Another baseball season is in the books, and while we didn't have a state championship run from our Columbia County schools, there were plenty of bright spots.

We've been spoiled by the sustained success of most of the county programs, so we often deem seasons like 2017 as disappointments. That's a bad assessment this season. Greenbrier, despite having only two seniors, captured another region title. Lakeside was vastly improved and capable of beating anyone in the state on any given day. Also, a great influx of sophomores and freshmen earned valuable varsity experience.

As always, some individual performances stood out and deserve recognition. So here's the 2017 All-Columbia County Baseball Team.

First Team

Catcher: Jacob Hardin (Sr., Lakeside) Warrior for the Panthers. 1st Team All-Region. Led LHS with a .398 batting average. had a .485 OB percent and 21 RBI

1st Base: Garret Marchman (Sr., Greenbrier) His numbers were down from previous seasons, but still one of the most dangerous hitters in the county. Hit .298 with a .409 OB percent, 2 HR and 21 RBI

Outfield: Terrell Dent (Jr., Grovetown) Dent hit .429 with 20 runs scored and swiped 10 bases.

Outfield: Carter Gibbons (Sr., Lakeside) Speedy centerfield for the Panthers. 1st Team All-Region selection after hitting .344, with a .474 on base percentage, and 30 runs scored.

Co-Coaches of the Year: Jason Osborn (Greenbrier) and T.J. Davis (Lakeside) Davis had Lakeside playing their best baseball in years, thanks to solid fundamentals. The Panthers made just 27 errors all season and nearly dethroned Greenbrier as Region Champs. However, the Pack won 23 games and the Region 3-AAAAAA Title, despite having only 2 seniors on the roster.

Co-Pitchers of the Year: Bryce Melear (Greenbrier) Ashton Sturgell (Evans) and Will Childers (Lakeside) Evans had a bit of a down season, but Sturgell was a huge bright spot. He posted the top ERA in the county and a sensational 0.97, while Melear was the ace for the top team in the county, going 5-1 on the season. The two shared Region 3-AAAAAA Pitcher of the Year Honors, but I had to include Childers, as well. He was the best pitcher in the county for a good portion of the season. Despite missing some of the season due to injury, he still went 5-1 with a 1.03 ERA.

Player of the Year: Matthew Chester (Greenbrier) Chester was the heart and soul of the county's top team. He's a talented all-around player. He earned Region 3-AAAAAA Player of the Year honors after hitting .439 and leading the county in hits (43) and doubles (13). Chester drove in 27 runs and was spectacular on defense.
