Greenbrier dominates all-star team

Coach of Year

Posted: November 26, 2014 - 12:12am

The 2014 All-County Softball Team was included in Sunday’s column. The remainder of the team and the post-season award winners are below.

Coach of Year

Garrett Black (Greenbrier)

Well, this was sort of a no-brainer. In a season where most people did not give Greenbrier a chance to win the state, that is exactly what this scrappy squad did. They posted a team record 36 wins and scored 414 runs. The ’Pack did this with underclassmen among five of their top nine players, and a pair of freshmen playing key roles on the team. The ’Pack also clinched their 16th region title in 19 seasons and advanced to the Elite 8 for the 14th time in the last 17 years.

Pitcher of Year

Kirsten Titus

(Sr./Greenbrier)

Titus went 17-3 on the mound for the Class AAAAA state champs. She was at her best with the game on the line, as she posted a 3-0 mark in elimination games in the Elite 8. She posted 56 wins over the last three seasons. Titus was equally effective at the plate, batting .474 with 13 doubles, five HR and 52 RBI. She will play at Jacksonville St. next season.

Player of Year

Kirsten McMonigle (Junior/Greenbrier)

Record-breaking year for this speedy performer. She was named the Region 2-AAAAA Player of the Year after posting team records in batting (.532), stolen bases (32), and runs scored (62). Her 32 stolen bases came on 32 attempts. She also had an on-base percentage of .616. On top of her accomplishments at the plate, she might be the best defensive infielder to play in Columbia County. She has committed to play for Georgia State University, but first she will try to help Greenbrier go back-to-back next season.
