Last week: 5-1
Season total: 52-12 (81.3 percent)
This week’s picks:
The season has come to an end for five of our seven schools. Only Lakeside and Augusta Christian are still standing. Here is a look at their match-ups this week.
GHSA AAAAA State playoffs
Lakeside (5-5) at Ware Co. (9-1)
Last week: Lakeside lost to Warner Robins 40-19; Ware County shut out Effingham County 49-0
Last meeting: Ware County topped Lakeside 31-6 in 2010
All-time: Ware County leads the series 3-0
Lakeside has scored 24.4 points per game and allowed 31.2, while Ware County has scored 33.6 and allowed 8.3.
Lakeside has a very good offense, but faces a major challenge this week. Ware County had four shutouts and allowed six or fewer points in six of its 10 games. The Panthers’ Achilles heel has been turnovers. The team needs to flip the script this week. It must create a few turnovers and come up with a few big plays on offense to pull the upset.
Ware County 38, Lakeside 16
SCISA AAA State title game
Saturday at Benedict College (Columbia, S.C.)
Augusta Christian (12-0) vs. Hammond (12-1)
Last week: ACS topped Orangeburg Prep 39-26; Hammond beat Wilson Hall 27-6
Last meeting: Augusta Christian beat Hammond 29-28 during the regular season
Augusta Christian has scored an average of 40.3 points per game and allowed 17.9, while Hammond has scored 34.3 and allowed 13.7.
Hammond has won six consecutive SCISA state championships and has another very good team. The only blemish on its record came at the hands of Augusta Christian.
In October, the Lions scored with less than a minute to go to cut Hammond’s lead to 28-27. Rather than kick the extra point, Keith Walton chose to go for two.
Tyler Roberson hit Gaige Gilbert on the conversion play and ACS won 29-28.
Hammond will be looking for some revenge this Saturday.
Augusta Christian has a little revenge on its mind too.
Coach Walton was a part of Augusta Christian teams that lost to Hammond in back-to-back state championship games in 2006 and 2007.
Augusta Christian 27, Hammond 23
