Last week: 5-1
Season total: 44-11 (80 percent)
This week’s picks:
Evans (3-5, 1-4) at Lakeside (4-4, 3-2)
Last week: Evans lost to Houston County 45-14; Lakeside lost to Jones County 49-35.
Last meeting: Lakeside won 17-0 last year
Series: Evans leads all-time 13-6-1
Evans is in the middle of another end-of-year slide. The Knights opened the season 2-1, but have gone 1-4 since. Evans has not scored on Lakeside since 2008. Lakeside has has outscored the Knights 64-0 in the past three games. Also, Lakeside is fighting for its playoff life and cannot afford a slip-up against an arch-rival. I think the Knights will end the scoring drought against Lakeside, but the Panthers will get the victory.
Lakeside 27, Evans 10
Grovetown (2-6, 2-3) at Greenbrier (1-7, 0-5)
Last week: Grovetown lost to Warner Robins 35-14; Greenbrier lost to Northside Warner Robins 35-0.
Last meeting: Grovetown won on the road last year 28-24
All-time: Series tied 1-1
Don’t let the record fool you. Grovetown is one of the best two-win teams you will ever see. The team has faced an extremely tough schedule that included Washington County, North Augusta, Swainsboro, Northside Warner Robins and Warner Robins. It’s a tough, hard-nosed team, now with a healthy Jamal Cummins. The Cummings-Juwan Biggers combo will be too much for Greenbrier.
Grovetown 30, Greenbrier 16
Augusta Christian (10-0) vs. Cardinal Newman (4-7)
(Round one of the SCISA AAA playoffs)
Last week: ACS beat Orangeburg Prep 42-20; Cardinal Newman lost to Ben Lippen 39-28
Last meeting: The Lions dominated Cardinal Newman back in mid-September 55-15 and bounced back from a sluggish performance two weeks ago to win easily over a very good Orangeburg Prep squad. The team should have no trouble moving on to Round Two.
Augusta Christian 41, Cardinal Newman 17
