Another tough week ahead in football

Posted: October 23, 2012 - 11:05pm

Last week: 5-0

Season total: 39-10 (79.6 percent)

This week’s picks:

Evans (3-4, 1-3) at Houston County (2-5, 0-4)

Last week: Evans lost to Grovetown 38-9; Houston County lost to Warner Robins 49-34

Last meeting: Houston County topped Evans 15-0 in 1999

All-time: Houston leads 2-0

Evans has fallen into the same rut as last year. The team can’t stop the run and does not have the offense to play from behind. The Knights face a Houston County team that is much better than its record would indicate.

Houston County 33, Evans 20

Greenbrier (1-6, 0-4) at Northside Warner Robins (7-0, 4-0)

Last week: Greenbrier lost to Lakeside 34-17; Northside Warner Robins beat Jones County 35-0.

Last meeting: First meeting

Greenbrier will have its hands full. Then again, everyone has their hands full with Northside. Ranked No. 1 in Class AAAAA, the team has steamrolled opponents this season. It has outscored the opposition 324-42 and the closest game was a 24-point win over 6-1 Westside Macon.

Northside Warner Robins 62, Greenbrier 10

Grovetown (2-3, 2-2) vs. Warner Robins (6-1, 4-0)

Last week: Grovetown beat Evans 38-9; Warner Robins beat Houston County 49-34

Last meeting: First meeting

A few weeks ago I would not have had a lot of faith in Grovetown in an offensive shootout. That was not what the team was built for. However, with Juwan Biggers making plays, the book on the Warriors is out the window. I still think the Demons may be a little too much, but Rodney Holder’s team has really impressed me this year.

Warner Robins 38, Grovetown 30

Harlem (2-6, 1-3) at Dublin (1-6, 1-2)

Last week: Harlem crushed Josey 35-8; Dublin was off.

Last meeting: First meeting

Harlem was impressive last week against a bigger Josey team. The team has a couple of terrific sophomore running backs in Austin Burt and Dontel Frails. Couple that with a down Dublin squad and I think Harlem will win.

Harlem 28, Dublin 13

Lakeside (4-3, 3-1) vs. Jones County (4-3, 2-2)

Last week: Lakeside beat Greenbrier 34-17; Jones County lost to Northside Warner Robins 35-0

Last meeting: Lakeside won 33-6 in 2005

All-time: The series is tied 1-1

A few weeks ago I would have picked Lakeside, but Jones County has looked very good in recent weeks. That might sound funny considering the team lost 35-0 last week, but it actually held Northside Warner Robins to its lowest point total of the season.

Jones County 31, Lakeside 27

Augusta Christian (9-0, 8-0) at Orangeburg Prep (7-3, 6-2)

Last week: Augusta Christian defeated Heathwood Hall 26-12; Orangeburg Prep beat Cardinal Newman 34-7

Last meeting: ACS won 41-25 last year

The Lions were a little flat after their win over Hammond and cannot afford a letdown. Orangeburg Prep is a solid team that can beat anyone and only lost to Hammond by a single point, 7-6.

Augusta Christian 20, Orangeburg Prep 16
