The Greenbrier High School Lady Wolfpack made quick work of Richmond Hill in the opening round of the AAAAA softball playoffs with a two-game sweep Wednesday. The ’Pack won game one 12-5 and took game two 11-2, improving its record to 27-6.
While Greenbrier was busy sweeping Richmond Hill, Harlem also broke out the broom. The Lady Bulldogs swept McIntosh Academy 1-0 and 4-1. While Greenbrier used its bats to advance, Harlem rode the arm of Amber Garrett. Garrett pitched all 14 innings of the doubleheader allowing only one run and striking out 21. Thanks to her stellar performance, Harlem advances in the playoffs and stands at 26-7.
The rest of the state should take notice – Garrett is only a freshman. Her pitching Wednesday might be the best clutch performance by any freshman in county history.
As a ninth grader, Nolan Belcher went 10-0 for Augusta Christian and helped lead the Lions to the South Carolina Independent Schools Association state crown. Belcher allowed only one earned run all season. While his record was as good as any freshman has had during a season, Garrett’s one-day performance is tough to beat.
As some of you might know, my radio show, A.B.’s Sportsline, is back on WGAC. I am thrilled. The show is on air from 6:05 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday-Friday and we will run down the top sports stories with an emphasis on local and regional teams and players.
The show also will feature plenty of high school football talk. Tune in each Monday for a brief listing of the top prep performers of the week and the best performances from the previous Friday night’s football games. Listeners will have a chance to vote on the player most deserving of WGAC’s Prep Performer of the Week.
The winning player will be announced each Thursday throughout the football season.
