Camp offers instruction in multiple sports

Patriots Park will be the site of an unusual sports camp from July 30-Aug. 2.

This is a busy time of year for all types of camp. These days, it seems like there is a different summer camp for every sport. Football, baseball, basketball, soccer, softball and cheerleading are among the more popular camps.

The Pro4mance Sports Camps’ brain trust decided to do something completely different – incorporate all six sports into one camp.

An advantage they have over most camps is the instructor’s skill level. The camp will be run by top-flight professionals and highly-accomplished college athletes.

Initially, the program started as a soccer camp. Wes Meadows, with the GA-SC Bulls Soccer Club, planned to hold the camp along with former Team USA and Major League Soccer star Clint Mathis.

The two, however, kept meeting with other great athletes and adding sports.

Young athletes from Columbia County will benefit from their vision. Boys and girls ages 6-14 can choose to focus on a single sport during the camp, or they can sample each sport offered.

Former Greenbrier High and Presbyterian College football standout Ryan Bowers will be on hand to work with campers on their speed and agility. Bowers, who recently gained national recognition as a contestant on hit ABC show The Bachelorette, is the owner of AthElite Sports Training Academy in Evans.

Bowers and his staff work with professional athletes on a regular basis. For this week, though, young athletes in the area will get the chance to build a solid foundation for speed and agility with AthElite on hand.

Bowers also will head up the football portion of the camp.

While Bowers is a key part of the camp, he’s certainly not alone.

Here is a rundown of some of the coaches and counselors who will be at the camp:

Soccer

Clint Mathis: He is considered one of the best American goal scorers of all time and was a part of several U.S. national squads.

Tracey Mathis: Like her husband, she has played professionally for many years. She was also a college standout at UCLA

Basketball

Will Avery: He is a former Westside High and Duke star. He was a first-round NBA selection and has played pro ball in both the NBA and overseas for more than a decade.

Briana Banks: She is a former Miss Georgia Basketball and McDonald’s All-American. She is a rising sophomore at U Conn.

Softball

Lisa Raio: She plays professionally and is a member of the Winthrop and Big South Conference Sports halls of fame.

Baseball

Robbie Wachman: He has played in the Cincinnati Reds organization and now runs Best 9 Sports Academy, which specializes in baseball instruction.

McKay McBride: He is a former Screven County star and first-round draft selection by the Atlanta Braves.

The camp includes an end-of-camp celebration at noon on Aug. 2. For more information or to register, go to www.pro4mance sportscamps.com.
