Posted: December 7, 2011 - 1:12am  |  Updated: December 14, 2011 - 3:41pm

The college football bowl season gets under way on Dec. 17.

In all, there will be 35 bowl games played in four weeks, culminating with the BCS Championship game between Louisiana State University and Alabama on Jan. 9.

There are at least three bowl games in which Columbia County fans should pay special attention. Each will have a former county player suiting up. Here is a look at those games.

ALLSTATE BCS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Jan. 9, 8:30 p.m., ESPN

LSU vs. Alabama

Lakeside product Josh Dickerson is a member of Nick Saban’s Alabama squad. Dickerson is a 6-foot-1, 235-pound redshirt sophomore linebacker for the Crimson Tide.

Dickerson was tremendous on both sides of the ball as a senior at Lakeside in 2009. He was an all-county and all-region selection for his work on the Panthers offensive line. He helped lead Lakeside to a 10-2 record and a region title.

HYUNDAI SUN BOWL

Dec. 31, 2 p.m., CBS

Georgia Tech vs. Utah

Former Augusta Christian standout Cole Turner is a freshman reserve defensive back for the Yellow Jackets. Turner, who played running back and linebacker for the Lions, is 6-foot-3, 200 pounds.

OUTBACK BOWL

Jan. 2, 1 p.m., ABC

Georgia vs. Michigan State

Former Evans star Reuben Faloughi has appeared in eight games for the Dogs and has three tackles, including one tackle for loss. Georgia is 10-3 on the season after falling to LSU in the SEC championship game.

Faloughi, who was also a standout basketball player at Evans, is a 6-foot-5, 255-pound outside linebacker and is a redshirt sophomore.

In addition, former Westside star Sanders Commings and former Burke County standout Cornelius Washington start for Georgia’s defense. Commings is fifth on the team with 48 tackles. He has four tackles for loss, one sack, one interception and one fumble recovery this year. He is one of only four defensive players to have started all 13 games for Georgia this season.

Washington has just 16 tackles, but is second on the team with five quarterback sacks and 24 quarterback hurries.
