Lakeside, Grovetown control their own destinies in Friday's games

Posted: November 2, 2011 - 12:03am  |  Updated: November 2, 2011 - 1:29am

Last week: 5-0

Season total: 40-11 (78.4 percent)

Lakeside and Grovetown control their own destinies. Both play at home Friday night, with a state playoff spot on the line. Augusta Christian opens the GISA playoffs with a home game versus Ben Lippen.

Grovetown (6-3, 3-2) vs. Washington County (6-3, 4-1)

Last week: Grovetown lost to Thomson 55-0; WACO beat Cross Creek 56-27.

Last meeting: WACO won last season 48-23.

All-time: WACO leads 1-0.

Grovetown has scored an average of 22.6 points per game and allowed 19.8; WACO has scored 38.6 and allowed 17.8. I am pulling hard for coach Rodney Holder and Co., but they are limping into this region match-up and Washington County is one of the best three-loss teams in Georgia.

Washington County 37, Grovetown 23

Lakeside (5-4, 4-1) vs. Brunswick (4-5, 3-2)

Last week: Lakeside shut out Evans 17-0; Brunswick beat Richmond Hill 38-19.

Last meeting: Brunswick won 24-7 in 2007.

All-time: Brunswick leads 2-0.

Lakeside has scored 28.4 points per game and allowed 26.3; Brunswick has scored 22.8 and allowed 24.1.

Both Lakeside and Brunswick have been plagued by turnovers, so whoever wins the turnover battle likely will win the game.

Lakeside 24, Brunswick 20

Augusta Christian (7-3) vs. Ben Lippen (4-6)

Last week: ACS lost to Hammond 21-20.

Last meeting: ACS beat Ben Lippen back in September 27-21.

Augusta Christian has scored 27.5 points per game and allowed 19.5; Ben Lippen has scored 24.9 and allowed 25.1.

The Lions beat Ben Lippen earlier this year and they are a better team now, while Ben Lippen seems to be going in the opposite direction.

ACS 37, Ben Lippen 20

Greenbrier (4-5, 2-3) vs. Wayne County (4-4-1, 3-2)

Last week: Greenbrier lost to Statesboro 52-22; Wayne County lost to Ware County 39-3.

Last meeting: Wayne County won a year ago 42-15.

All-time: Greenbrier leads the series 3-2.

Greenbrier has scored 23.8 points per game and allowed 30.6; Wayne County has scored 2.1 and allowed 28.8.

Greenbrier has shown flashes this year, including hanging in there with No. 3 Statesboro for much of last week, but former Lakeside coach Jody Grooms’ team will be a little too much.

Wayne Co. 34, Greenbrier 20

Evans (3-6, 1-4) vs. Richmond Hill (5-4, 1-4)

Last week: Evans lost to Lakeside 17-0; Rich-mond Hill lost to Brunswick 38-19.

This is the first time these two schools have played.

Evans has scored 17.3 points per game and allowed 25.7; Richmond Hill has scored 24.9 and allowed 21. It has been a rough year for Evans, but the Knights are extremely young so the future looks bright.

Richmond Hill 24, Evans 17

Harlem (0-9, 0-5) vs. Hephzibah (0-9, 0-5)

Last week: Harlem lost to Josey 40-6; Hephzibah lost to Glenn Hills 30-28

Last meeting: Hephzi-bah won 53-7 in 2009.

All-time: Harlem leads 11-10.

Harlem has scored 4.4 points per game and allowed 41.7; Hephzibah has scored 12.6 and allowed 35.3.

Hephzibah has been competitive in several games and should win.

Hephzibah 27, Harlem 12
