Richmond Academy's upset of Grovetown was surprise

Evans (3-5, 1-3) at Lakeside (4-4, 3-1)

Posted: October 26, 2011 - 12:33am  |  Updated: October 26, 2011 - 1:59am

Last Week: 4-1

Season Total: 35-11 (76.1%)

I came really close last week on every game but one. Richmond Academy’s upset of Grovetown I did not see coming.

I did the play-by-play for Grovetown’s 31-7 loss to Richmond last season. In that contest, the Musketers simply had too many athletes for Grovetown.

Maybe that game had lingering effects, because that is a game Grovetown should win nine times out of 10.

Give the Musketeers credit, they crowded the line of scrimmage and dared Grovetown to pass. The Warriors were without starting quarterback Hunter Peace and had not thrown the ball well all year anyway. Granted, they have not had to with their terrific ground game.

Aside from that one, the picks last week were dead-on. I picked Evans to win by two points over Effingham and they won by one. I predicted Westside to beat Harlem 20-13; they won 21-6. Also, I had South Effingham beating Greenbrier by three, which was exactly the final margin. And, I nearly got the Augusta Christian score on the nose. I predicted 38-10; it was 36-10 in their victory over Pinewood Prep.

OK, enough bragging. Here are this week’s picks.

Evans (3-5, 1-3) at Lakeside (4-4, 3-1)

Last week: Evans beat Effingham County 28-27; Lakeside was Idle.

Last meeting: Lakeside shut out Evans 30-0 last season.

All-time: Evans leads the series 13-5-1, but Lakeside has won the last two games by a combined 47-0.

Evans has scored an average of 19.5 points per game and allowed 27.5. Lakeside has scored 29.9 and allowed 29.6.

Lakeside can’t look past Evans, and I do not think they will. It is a big rivalry game and they are trying to win their fourth game in a row. I think they will make it three straight wins over the Knights.

Lakeside 37, Evans 14

Greenbrier (4-4, 2-2) vs. Statesboro (8-0, 4-0)

Last week: Greenbrier lost a heartbreaker to South Effingham 38-35; Statesboro was idle.

Last meeting: Statesboro won 31-7 last year.

All-time: Statesboro leads the series 10-1.

Greenbrier has scored 24 points per game and allowed 27.9. Statesboro has scored 30.1 and allowed 13.3.

Statesboro 34, Greenbrier 17

Grovetown (6-2, 3-1) at Thomson (8-0, 4-0)

Last week: Grovetown lost to ARC 21-0; Thomson crushed Josey 54-7.

Last meeting: Thomson won last season 42-14.

All-time: Thomson leads 1-0.

Grovetown has scored 25.4 points per game and allowed 15.4. Thomson has scored 55.8 and allowed 13.6.

Thomson leads the state in scoring and margin of victory. It will be a tough night for Grovetown. Hopefully, the Warriors can rise to the occasion.

Thomson 49, Grovetown 17

Harlem (0-8, 0-4) vs. Josey (1-7, 0-4)

Last week: Harlem lost to Westside 21-6; Josey fell to Thomson 54-7.

Last meeting: Josey won last season 25-24.

All-time: Harlem leads the series 6-5.

Harlem has scored 4.3 points per game and allowed 41.9. Josey has scored 16 and allowed 33.5.

Josey 27, Harlem 6

Augusta Christian (7-2) vs. Hammond (8-1)

Last week: ACS topped Pinewood Prep 36-10; Hammond beat Heathwood Hall 51-0.

Last meeting: Hammond beat ACS in last year’s playoffs 37-12.

All-time: Hammond leads 9-1.

Augusta Christian has scored 28.3 points per game and allowed 19.3. Hammond has scored 36.9 and allowed 10.3.

I am pulling hard for the Lions here. I would love to see coach Keith Walton get this one, but Hammond has been their nemesis and it likely will continue.

Hammond 31, Augusta Christian 24

Also, congratulations to Augusta Prep on 46-20 win over East Atlanta last week. The Crusaders closed out their regular season with a solid 5-3 record.
