Greenbrier’s Turner proves tough in clutch

Posted: October 11, 2011 - 9:07pm  |  Updated: October 11, 2011 - 9:20pm

Last Week: 4-1 (80%)

Season Total: 25-10 (71.4%)

Evans High School's loss to Greenbrier was my only miscue last week. I have to give the Wolfpack a lot of credit. They mixed up the offense much better and deserved the win.

Quarterback Cody Turner has struggled with his accuracy at times this season, but he stepped up with the game on the line and went three of four passing on the final drive (his lone incompletion was a catchable ball). Evans' streak of four straight winning seasons is in jeopardy as the Knights fall to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in region play.

Lakeside is surging. The Panthers hammered Effingham County 42-14 for their second straight win. Don't let their 3-4 record fool you; the Panthers have a solid football team.

Grovetown moved to 5-1 with a 28-14 win over Westside, and with two very winnable games up next, the Warriors should be 7-1 heading into their matchup with Thomson.

This week's games:

Evans (2-4, 0-2) vs. Statesboro (7-0, 3-0)

Last week: Evans lost to Greenbrier 21-17; Statesboro blasted South Effingham 41-17.

Last meeting: Evans beat Statesboro 20-15.

All-time: Statesboro leads 9-2 in the series, but Evans has won two in a row.

Evans has scored 21.3 points per game and allowed 26.5. Statesboro has scored 29.6 and allowed 15.1.

I am pulling hard for coach Marty Jackson and the Knights, but they will have their hands full trying to contain Statesboro running back Daquan Daniels this week.

Greenbrier (3-3, 1-1) vs. Effingham County (1-6, 0-3)

Last week: Greenbrier won a thriller over Evans 21-17; Effingham County got pounded by Lakeside 42-14.

Last meeting: Effingham County won 14-7 last year.

All-time: Effingham has a perfect 5-0 record vs. Greenbrier.

Greenbrier has scored 20.3 points per game and allowed 26.2. Effingham County has scored 16.4 and allowed 31.3.

Greenbrier should get its first win over Effingham this week.

Grovetown (5-1, 2-0) at Josey (1-5, 0-2)

Last week: Grovetown beat Westside 28-14; Josey lost to Richmond Academy 15-6.

Last meeting: Grovetown won last year 38-26.

All-time: Grovetown leads 1-0.

Grovetown has scored 26.8 points per game and allowed 14.8. Josey has scored 17.8 and allowed 28.1.

Grovetown should win this game, but Josey is decent for a 1-5 team and Marques Horton is very dangerous dual-threat quarterback.

Harlem (0-6, 0-2) vs. Richmond Academy (2-4, 1-1)

Last week: Harlem was shut out by Thomson 63-0; ARC beat Josey 15-6.

Last meeting: ARC won last year 44-6.

All-time: ARC leads the series 7-6. Harlem's last win was in 2005.

Harlem has scored an average of 2.3 points per game and allowed 51. ARC has scored 16.3 and allowed 27.8.

ARC has a few too many weapons for Harlem.

Lakeside (3-4, 2-1) vs. South Effingham (3-4, 2-1)

Last week: Lakeside beat Effingham County 42-14; South Effingham lost to Statesboro 41-17.

Last meeting: Lakeside won last year 21-14.

All-time: Lakeside leads 1-0.

Lakeside has scored an average of 31.9 points per game and allowed 39.4. South Effingham has scored 23.3 and allowed 28.1.

Both teams are 3-4, but Lakeside's schedule has been much tougher than South Effingham's.

Lakeside 38, South Effingham 17

Augusta Christian (5-2) vs. Orangeburg Prep (6-2)

Last week: ACS beat Heathwodd Hall 34-14; Orangeburg Prep beat Pinewood Prep 32-9.

All-time: ACS leads 5-2 and has won five straight in the series.
