Grovetown defenders close in on Evans quarterback Demekus Taylor in Friday’s game. Taylor passed for 202 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed for 151 in the win.

When it plays host to Greenbrier this week, Evans will have its eye on several things.

The Knights will try to remain undefeated in region play when they play host to the Wolfpack at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Evans will also attempt to extend its winning streak to six games against Greenbrier.

There's another goal for the Knights as well. Evans will look to score 40 or more points again after posting a 42-32 victory at Grovetown. The Knights, who have scored 40 or more points in six consecutive contests, are 42 points shy of tying the school record for most points scored in a season (340 points, 1987).

Evans improved to 5-2 overall, 2-0 Region 3-AAAAAA after quarterback Damekus Taylor recorded five touchdowns against the Warriors. The Knights recorded more than 400 yards of offense, with Taylor accounting for 353 of that total. He completed 8 of 11 pass attempts for 202 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Taylor also rushed 18 times for 151 yards with three scores.

Evans led most of the game and went up 35-19 on a Taylor 1-yard touchdown run early in the fourth. Grovetown (4-4, 2-1) bounced back as Shamar Cofield broke off a 59-yard run for a touchdown. Then Corey Watkins, who rushed for 71 yards and a touchdown, fumbled away the ensuing kickoff. On fourth down, the Warriors set up for a 38-yard field goal. But holder Taylor Youngblood straightened up and fired a 21-yard touchdown pass to Braxton Wharton in the end zone.

Grovetown trailed by three, but it couldn't get a final stop. The Warriors extended Evans' final drive with offsides penalty on third down and another on fourth down. After Grovetown used up all its timeouts, the Knights faced fourth and four from the 29, Taylor hit Connor Warren over the middle for a 29-yard touchdown. Evans put the game away at 42-32 with 1:38 remaining.

Grovetown got off to a fast start when D'Angelo Durham picked off a Taylor pass on the third play from scrimmage, setting the Warriors up on the 19.

Four plays later, Durham, who rushed for 143 yards, punched it in from the 3. After the missed extra point, Grovetown led 6-0.

Evans responded immediately. On the ensuing drive, Taylor broke off a 44-yard run before scampering for 15 yards on the next play. From the 19, Taylor found Phenix Jenkins in the end zone to tie the game. Max Tyler put Evans ahead with the extra point.

Later in the quarter, Grovetown took the lead back. On third and 8, Jahmar Bingham delivered a spiraling, 66-yard touchdown pass to Braxton Wharton. Donnie McLean nailed his first extra-point attempt. The Warriors led 13-7.

Evans retook the lead on its next drive, when Taylor scored on a 10-yard run. Tyler nailed the extra point and then came up huge minutes later with his 57-yard punt for the Knights down at the 1.

Evans forced Grovetown to punt from its end zone, starting its next drive from the Warriors' 28.

Behind a convoy of blockers, Taylor kept the ball around the right side and kept on trucking into the end zone. With 2:51 left in the half, the Knights led 21-13.
