Lexius Jeffcoat readily admits she's competitive.

The Evans senior occasionally plays the card game, Phase 10, with her mother, Rolanda. When they face off, it's a cutthroat affair.

"Oh gosh," Jeffcoat said. "My mom is competitive."

The 5-foot-5 Jeffcoat has been competing in various sports for many years. As a youth, she played flag football with the boys and also played softball. In seventh grade, she began playing basketball - something that didn't come natural at first. That initial season, she played fifth quarter hoops.

"The fifth quarter is a quarter before the game when all the really bad people play," she said. "So I played fifth quarter, and it made me excited."

The fifth quarter motivated Jeffcoat to work harder on her skills in the offseason. When she returned for eighth grade, she didn't play the fifth quarter anymore. Instead, she played the entire game.

Jeffcoat established herself on the basketball court when she arrived on the high school scene. Last season, the guard earned all-state honors, averaging 15.8 points, 7.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.8 steals a game.

She said she hopes to play basketball in college. Wherever she goes, she said plans to major in physical therapy or mathematics.

Before she can think about basketball, though, Jeffcoat will try to stay focused on volleyball. She started playing the sport last season because of her friend, Kierstyn Bechtel. Jeffcoat said she couldn't turn down the opportunity to play another sport.

"I just like moving," she said. "It was a lot of learning. I had to learn all the rules and everything I couldn't do."

Jeffcoat, who plays middle blocker, said she has more court awareness now. She's worked hard to improve her volleyball ability. That's her competitive nature coming out.

"I have a clue," she said, "on certain situations now."
