John Engler, the 2016 Georgia Mid-Amateur champion, is one of the top contenders in the field this week in the Georgia Amateur Championship, which begins Thursday at West Lake Country Club.

For the first time in 17 years, the Georgia Amateur Championship is back in the Augusta area.

The 101st annual golf event returns to West Lake Country Club, which has held the tournament twice before (1980, 2000). The 72-hole Georgia Amateur starts Thursday and runs through Sunday. The low 70 players and ties will advance to weekend play.

"It's certainly an honor," West Lake Director of Golf Kirk Hice said. "It's a wonderful time for the course and the country club."

West Lake has held a handful of major amateur events in recent years. The Georgia State Golf Association held its Top 60 Women's Classic there in 2010. Five years later, the state's Junior Championship took place at West Lake. In 2016, the Women's Southern Golf Association held its amateur championship at West Lake.

Hice said the 6,816-yard, par-71 course is in perfect condition, thanks to the mix of sunshine and rain in recent weeks. He said greens are rolling "12-plus" on the Stimpmeter.

"I think it'll give the players a good, fair test," he said.

Eighteen of the 144 players in the field live in the Augusta area, while several others have ties to the area. Lee Knox, who grew up in Augusta and now resides on St. Simons Island, is a two-time winner of this event (2010, 2012). Coleman Tidwell (Macon) and Keith Guest (Athens) played golf at Augusta University.

John Engler Jr. of Augusta is a player to watch this week. Engler claimed a GSGA title last year, when he won the Georgia Mid-Amateur Championship.

Other Augustans in the event include Taylor Floyd, a member of the Jaguars' two-time national championship team in 2010 and 2011. Also, Lakeside golfer Clay Grantham is playing, along with Graham Hill, Jay Mundy, Jason Murphy, Carson Spears and James Williams. Andrew Duffie, States Fort, Jared Macky and Will Rogers will all be representing Evans. Andrew Chong of Grovetown and Dalton Reese of Warrenton are in the field, along with five players from Martinez: Doug Carter, Hunter Dunagan, Jordan Johnstun, Mike Kerbelis and Emmanuel Kountakis.

Hice listed Chong, Grantham, Hill, Kerbelis, Kountakis and Johnstun as West Lake members. He said he expects them all to play well.

"Anytime you're familiar with the golf course," Hice said, "it can only help you."

Dunagan and Fort, now college golfers, each played well two years ago in the Georgia Junior at West Lake. Dunagan shot 71-70-70 and tied for fourth, while Fort tied for 10th place.
